Through various sources I have been told that the 324 diesel crank can be used in the M20 engine, can you use the crank from a 325 TDS (E36)
If so, what are the benfits, are they a billet crank like the 324 etc etc.
I might have chance of one of these.
I've looked at the ETK and it shows the same picture so no real info there.

Pickety pick:
Don't think any Beemers have billet cranks. The diesels have forged cranks though which is even better

cheers for that, I was hoping to avoid measuring the crank as that would mean I'd have to buy it as it's still tucked away in a TDS motor with a snapped timing chain...
Un-pickety pick, I was told they were billet by the local unfriendly expensive BM breaker. Forged it is then.
I know they are driven differently (chain v belt) but the drive looks as though it keyed onto the crank so could be changed, I'm sure I read somewhere they would give 2.8 litres on an ETA block or am I thinking 324td...

the 324 crank is the same as the 2.7 eta crank (81mm stroke), except it is forged.
there are quite a few people out there using cranks from m5x/s5x motors in their m20's to build big strokers, i cant give you any exact info but i understand its pretty easily done. i just did a search and apparently your crank in question has a stroke of 82.8mm, could definitely be made to work (maybe e rods, i pistons, take around 1mm off the block..) as long as it physically fits. then again, if you are going to go to the trouble of fitting a non m20 crank you might as well go for an 84mm one or something

What models used an 84mm crank or are these purpose made one-offs?
Who makes/sells stroker cranks and kits in the UK?

It looks like it would be easier to repair the 325tds motor and fit that. I'd still get 180bhp with a tuning box. - lol

iirc the engines in the 324/5td/tds were the same as the ones in the 524/5td/tds...
therefore a possible source of parts may be
http://www.bmwe34.net/
hope this helps (they may have some more info on the crank differences too?)
