UPDATE (28/01/08 ):

I have just taken delivery of another batch of 25 pairs of these plates. Please read below for further details, how to order/pay etc....

After having a bit of suspension trouble on my Touring (details HERE) I ordered a set of Z3 reinforcement plates from ZimmerBimmer to strengthen the rear turret's of my car. (Thanks Paul.... :D )

I know that a number of members have expressed an interest in buying some of these plates to strengthen their cars - especially those who tend to go to track days or have got some corrosion around the rear inner arches.

The BMW price for these parts are £10.20 each (inc. VAT) plus delivery and Paul can supply them at a discounted rate - around £9.00 each. (£18 to do both sides)

I am able to get a batch made to the exact same spec (3mm thick, zinc plated with yellow passivate) and supply them for £13 pair delivered. (I'll have to check if the postage will cost any more for our Irish Zoners?)

Image

PAYMENT DETAILS

All sets of plates will be sent out First Class within 24hrs of payment being received.....

If paying by PayPal, please add 65p to cover the fees.

My PayPal address is: mail[at]metalmonkeys.co.uk (replace [at] with @) and PLEASE remember to include your username in the 'Note' section!

If you want to send me a cheque, please email me at the above email address and I'll reply with my postal address etc....(don't PM)

Regards,

Bruce.

I'm assuming they can be dropped on without removing the assembly??

Did they make any real difference?

You simply undo the two nuts on the top of the turret, slip the plate over and put the nuts back on. You don't have to remove any of the shock/top mount.

On a saloon/coupe/cab its about a 5 min job (for both sides) and for a touring it'll probably take between 30-60 mins (depending on how fluent you are at taking the rear panels/speaker pods/rear belts out)

I can't comment on any 'difference' they make other than the peace of mind that the whole area around the top mount is now nicely reinforced.

This is especially useful if you track your car or just want to add some extra strength around that area....more so if you have stiffened suspension and/or uprated anti roll bars or carry large loads or a hoofing great sub set-up in the boot....the list goes on.

It's not a cure as such (except in my case!) but a 'preventative' measure in an area that could possibly prove to be a weakness in the longer term??

I hope that helps or at least partly answers your questions??

Regards,

Bruce.

Just a quick update - because it looks like we'll achieve the 15 sets for a batch quicker than I thought, I have taken a bit of a gamble and gone ahead and ordered 50 sets to be made! :D :D

I'll be quite a bit out of pocket to start with, but I figured that if I order them now, they will be with you sooner.....

As soon as they are made & plated I'll let everyone know how to pay me. I reckon about 2-3 weeks until I have them in my posession.....(hopefully sooner??)

Regards,

Bruce.

I have just spoken the the engineering company. The plates should be ready by the end of next week and will be sent stright off to be Zinc plated (kept it yellow passivate to make it the same as the original ones...)
Quaser wrote:is 1 pair enough, or would 2 be better (above and below?) is there enough thread on the stud to do this?
I was going to originally mount one above and one below, but there doesn't seem to be quite enough thread to do so.

That said, mine has a thick spring washer added and still got some random bits of turret on there from where my shock ripped out which will take up valuable thread. Once Dameon has a look at it on Sunday I'll be able to tell more clearly if there is room for another plate below (although I'm not too sure if it is needed because the top mount sits pretty well under the turret anyway...)

So the list so far is:
