OK, I think its time for me to put an alarm on my car, so any suggestions as to which ones are good and which ones to be aware of...

Ive heard clifford use to be good but not to sure nowadays, seen viper being advertsied in pbmw mag, not too sure how good they are.

Any others out there that would protect my pride n joy from getting in the b*$tar+s hands.

As Brianmooore has pointed out before an alarm is to put the bastards off and possibly lower your insurance so an CAT 1 alarm will do go for the one with the best price and features, installed by the most competant people.

My alarm is CAT1 but the immobiliser is shite and I've beaten it in no time when the alarm played up and in the process found that the alarm installer must be a complete ape as his wiring is shocking, and hes allowed to do that sort of work!

Anyway more Brianmoore knowledge (I'm an idiot but can qoute other peoples tips all day) is that the best form of security is to install some form or breaker switch not easily found or bypassible from the fuel pump to the earth. I believe this is because you can make most fuel pumps run by bridging a couple wires in the engine bay, the method which is often used to check a duff fuel pump! I prepare to be corrected. :D

iv got the viper cat1 pager alarm and can say it is perfect......the components used are the same as clifford i think

clifford own viper.....anyway cat1 will reduce ur insurance iv had it a year no problems lifetime warranty but best

of all is the pager the remote looks a bit gimikie but does exactly what its ment to any1 comes near it chirps to

warn away but then pages you so if it does that a few times you know some1's trying it and if your away from the

car and alarm goes off atlest you will know!! I installed it coz of stuff like my hardtop...no point havin an alarm if

THE CLIFFORD. Ive got a Clifford alarm on my 325 cab, that was fitted by the previous owner and i find it great.
Soon as i got the car i wanted to get it checked out, just to make sure everything was working right,
and i had no problems finding a local company to service the alarm give me a spare remote and reprograme all the codes. Engineer also told me that they fit alot of differant alarms and that over time the clifford has proven to the best.

all down to personal opinions i suppose, but my experience with clifford is that its not very user friendly and always have hiccups or irritating little problems that need sorting... as for the viper, i know a few people that have had them installed and at 1 stage was considering it too, until, all of them had problems with their pagers, they just stopped working? mines a pageguard, with colour display pager, engine start, immob, window close, and a on board camera which takes piccy's when alarm goes off... touch wood, no probs till now... :D

I'm also trying to search around for a decent alarm (thinking of retro fitting a 13b OBC so can use the PIN for immob). The details all seem to be a little thin as I would like to find out if it's possible to install a remote C/L & total closure system

the immobilser on the 13 button obc is worse than useless, only bad part of the obc imo.

i'd get a decent alarm on a good deal and do what brian has suggested in the past re earthing the fuel pump or whatever it is. :D

As long as a Vehicle Systems Installation Board (VSIB) approved installers fits the alarm most cat1 etc alarms

come with life time warranty so if you do have any problems with pagers etc they fix it what you pay for is what

you get at the end of the day just stay away from the cowboys :D

If your getting an alarm fitted use a VSIB registered installer as he will have to install to a high standard also dont buy the alarm for its toys. I have fitted Clifford, Toad, Sigma and a fair few others over the years and will agree that Clifford are good as are Toad. But any alarm is only as good as the fitter. If you are looking for a pager, datatool make one that will page your mobile. Dont be tempted to buy a system from ebay and fit your self.

if anyone is looking around the Berkshire area use D'S Auto Electrical. www.dsauto.co.uk
