does anyone know for definate that a e28 528i diff will fit on the end of an e30 m3 prop and sit happily in a e36 318ti rear setup. 
i think these diffs were 3.25 (correct me if wrong) but were they all slippers?cheers

Yes it will. You need a 325i rear cover and output shafts to fit it. Ratios vary between 3.25 and 3.45 and LSD's are rare.

are there any other options (apart from e30 m3 diff) bearing in mind theres a s50b30 on the other end of it

e28 diffs tend to be a lower ratio than e30's.
