its taken me two years to get mine to how it is now so im not about to rush it in a race to the finish. besides which the bss is a few strides in front already. thats my excuse anyway
oh yeah
get some more pics up
No longer self employed but still available for welding duties.
I will prob buy a smoked set and change them over for things like shows but this will be the only styling change other than wheels. I'm in no race and things are about to slow down because of little spare time at the moment to put it back together and lack of funds untill my other car is sold. I'm not going to rush it as i want it to be right and i would say being ready for wednesdays Guildford meet was a bit optomistic so i will try and have it the way i want it for Gaydon, sourcing of parts permiting! And yes i'm dreading the stone chips!
guys do you know if they make a bra for e30's- used them on old vw's when i were a wee teenager. they were made of shaped vinyl and clipped on the front end protecting from stone chips when smoking around- get to a car show and pop 'em off.......
Thanks fella, I'm very very pleased with the results and i cant thank enough the people responsibe for it.nixon wrote:That is a fantastic paint job your mate has done! bet you wer beeming ear to ear when you pulled outside in the daylight!
What a work,..... The car is ready for more 25 years

Things a progessing slowly now but have managed to fit up a few more bits including the doors, here's some pics.
I managed to remove the original door membrane's which were in perfect condition so reused them.

Fitted the tweeter pods i got, thanks old skool 2002!

After seeing the problem eko has just discovered i thought i'd show you what happend with mine. After stripping the car and finding much to my delight that it was completly rot free you can imagine how gutted i was when i discovered the only rot was in the most awkward place to repair.
It was decided that the only way to sort this properly and to stop it coming back was to replace this section but sadly this panel is no longer availible from BMW so i had to locate a good roof and cut it off!
I was lucky to find a sound sunroof tray in a calypso red 4dr 318i in a bmw breakers in Erith, Kent so cut the roof of from the sunroof appature back. The next course of action was to carefully unpick the tray from the skin and prepair it for fitting. Once this was done the rusty one had to be very carefully removed from the car as it is bonded to the roof skin and this could easily be distorted from the removal or fitting. The sunroof tray is bonded to the roof skin and has a small bracket each side spot welded to the roof frame. As the tray has been cut in half where there are cut outs, this section had to be very carefully welded on this section. Here's some pics of how this repair was executed.
The rust as you look into the sunroof tray which is not easy to spot with the sunroof panel and headlining in place.

The bracket that need removing is above the drain tube in the pic.

Better view of the rust with the tray cut out.

The donor panel preped for fitting. The small amount of surface rust on this one was wire wheel'd off, treated then coated with zinc alloy spray.

The donor tray fitted.

Even with great care taken the roof skin still needed a skim of filler arround the line of the tray, this has potential to have needed alot more work but because of the skill of the panel beater only a minimal amound of work was needed to get the roof dead straight.

Once this was done and painted along with the rest of the car i sprayed this area 3 times with wax oil leaving it to dry between coats as i dont want this ever coming back! This area originaly has zero anti corosion material of any sort and is an area that water runs along and can sit if the drain tubes get blocked which none of mine were so its a bit puzzeling how this has happened to mine!

This rusty bit with the sun roof is exactly whats wrong with mine and I wasn't sure if it could be sorted so you've just solved my problem!!!
My drain tray is totally fecked tho!! you could give the drain pipes a tug and they'd probably come free!!
So I had to just seal my sunroof shut for now....nice fix tho!!

Yes i was mortified when i first saw it but was lucky enough to find a good tray and have a good panel beater on hand to sort it.
I wasn't sure if it could be fixed cause i want to use my sunroof but I'm glad i noticed this, so i'll sort mine when i get mine resprayed!!
but i've got some saving to do first.
Did you weld yours in or was it rebonded???

It was re-bonded in and the two brackets re-spot welded in as per original.

Hi Barry and Paul. Not sure if this is any use but look VERY carefully at the trailer shot on the link below. Behind the trailor is the exact panel you need (albeit complete with roof) and I've zoomed in as best I can and it looks a goodun. Might be worth a PM to the guy?

Progess has been made and will finish putting it back together on sat. All the body panels are on so just the badges, remaining lights, spoiler and interior left to do. Got a full OBC kit to go on as well (thanks Chris W) and hopefully will have sold my e46 this weekend so can buy some goodies for it. Managed to get a garage to put it in so thats taken a weight off my mind about leaving it outside my house. These will be the last pics now untill its done.
Its a bit dusty from sitting in the workshop for two weeks!

After all the body panels were put on the car it was then that the few tiny bits of crap were de-nibed then the whole car was only pollished (not flattened and pollished) to keep the factory shimmer finish to the paint.

Deffinately worth doing to spec it up. Just out of interest all the parts for heated seats are listed as availible on realoem.com. Thought about doing it along with a/c.B7 wrote:Let me know how you get on with the OBC fit. I'm seriously think of one for mine to replace the 6 button setup.

Coming along very nicely, looks sweet. Must look even better in reality
Well its been a bitty couple of weeks trying to put the sport back together what with the crap weather
and other stuff but it is complete now bar a couple of bits inside that need attention. Fitted the new gutter trims today and a couple of bits in between the showers this morning and cleaned it for the first time with some meguiars shampoo and cleaning mitt and was going to hand polish and wax using more meguiars products but it started to rain again
so will leave till in the week. This bloody weather is really getting on my nerves now, i woke up at 7 this morning and it was sunny so drove 10 miles to where my 30 is kept, started working on after shutting my finger in the door of my 46 then it started to rain. After managing get done what i did, the rain stopped and the sun came out on the way home
Any way here's a taster, more pics to follow when its pollished, waxed and the inside is finished.
