I'm hopefully going to collect my new E30 on Saturday. :D

It has a full MOT but no tax. Its a long way from where i live. I'm going to get a train there and drive my new baby back. I want the car to be taxed. Whats the best way? I'll insure it in my name but the ownership docs will still be in the vendor's name. Will I still be able to tax it on line? I probably won't have a cover note by then but if i do can i take the cover note, MOT cirt and ownership slip to a post office, even though the insurance is for a different person than the owner?

Very excited BTW!

You can use the green tearoff (new keepers suppliment) to tax the car.

Or alternatively, politely ask the owner to tax the car for 6 months before you collect and add £100 onto the price, so he aint outta pocket

Providing you have a cover note and MOT it should be fine. The post office will actually send of the old V5 on your behalf.

While you're asking politely you could point out that as the registered keeper he'll be liable for fines until the paperwork goes through...and assuming its not SORN he'll be lucky to miss the £85 fine for the gap in registration anyway.

I would try as stated above to get the owner to tax it.If by the time you get there will the post office still be open on a saturday and will you have a cover note by then as without one you will not get tax.Just to bear in mind there are two offences you can commit here, one is failing to have tax(dvla matter),the other is failing to display tax(police matter).

The current owner won't be able to tax it as it is currently SORNed and uninsured. It won't be insured until i add it to my policy.

The police are pretty hot on this and i once got £300 in fines in 2 days despite the fact that I'd back dated the tax before I'd been informed it had been spotted (and i had only just bought it). Its a long way from Sheffield to Norwich. . .

Post office on the morning is only real chance. Adds a lot of stress if I've got to get there and to the post office before midday. Could it be done on interweb? does anyone know how quickly insurnace companies tell DVLA that car is covered?

hey mate

you can get an emailed cover note showing the new reg and as has been said as long as you have the mot and the V5 even in the old owners name, the post office will tax it for you. there is a slip on the v5 that the old keeper tears off and gives to you for the purpose of taxing the car and to satisfy the police of ownership before you get the new V5 in your name.

This happened to me once. I found out i got the car on a Tuesday night, so i rang my insurers and asked if i could change the car on my policy for Saturday, they did this. I said i need the insurance documents with me by Friday and they said they would post them on manually first class in the morning(weds), they then arrived on Thurs. Also when i taxed a car a couple of months ago, the lady at the counter didn't even check the v5, if this at all helps

If you tax it on the net you are still not going to get the tax disc by friday unless you are very very lucky.Even if you do tax it on line you will still get done for failing to display. However you probably will not trigger any anpr cameras on the way home and therefore the police would not pull you over for an anpr ping.

I'd been smoking about for about 8 months with a false tax disc (many years ago I may add!!!) in my first 325,my Dad had asked me if I would use it as his wedding car, course I was delighted, but had to tell him about the tax as I wasn't going to have dodgy tax on a wedding car!

So,that was a while in advance, but it took me a while to sort it out.

Cut a long story short,my insurance certificate arrived on the Saturday of the wedding at 11.30am,stormed down to the local PO to get tax before they shut at 12pm......"Have you used the car on the road etc etc ??"......" No Miss,honestly..."

Tax disc in hand, shot back up to my Dads house arriving at 11.50am,ten minutes to spare before we left!!

Had a sweat on that morning!

sod it then. just have to chance it. I'll have doc that prove its insured and MOT'd. Once I'm out of Yorkshire I've only got to get accross the badlands of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire and I'm running free in Norfolk. How many anpr equiped coppers can there be in those backward enclaves? I'll get the disk on Monday and back date it to the start of the month (bugger!). That should show good intention.

dont know what its like where you come from but every traffic car in london is now anpr equiped so even if you carry the docs with you and its picked up on a anpr they will already know it has mot ...then it will be shown sorn and show no insurance ....this is where you need a cover note cos if you cant prove then and there its insured and no email ins paper is good enough they will seize your car ...tow it ...charge you £105 plus storage

can you not get the ins cover note sent before you go and then tax it when you pick it up the current police fine for no tax disc displayed is £60(non endorsable) ..you cant tax it on line because the insurance companys are so slow updating the mib database and its from this where the dvla take the details so you can tax it on line

ANPR is everywhere I'm afraid. Personally I wouldn't chance it. There must be a PO where you can get it taxed.

ignore the rest, I didn't notice it had full MOT :(

the way to do it is book the car for a mot at your end ie where you live drive it back if you get stoppted tell your booked it in for the mot your are covered, i no the cars already moted but is there a law to say you carnt you could easily say i have broght the car but im getting it re-motd has my kids are going to be in there and i carnt be 100 per cent sure thats the old mots not a bent one, as a note to what gazza said hes write about they wont update ins deatails and put them on the system the police only normaly take cars once you admitt no insurance as if you get the reg wrong when your insuring your car etc it wont be on the system and if they do take the car which im 99 per cent sure they wont you just go to the police station with your insurance they stamp your card and you get it back with no charges ie the police pay the bill and thats you they dont just take your car for the fun of it cause it comes out there budget its been a long post i konw but hopefully it may help you

As tax is the only thing that would show up they would not take the car.The database would be updated pretty quickly so you would have no worries with 165A Power to seize vehicles driven without licence or insurance.
as for booking it in for an mot i doubt they would buy that one as it already has an mot so there is no excuse for not having the tax as he has the means to be able to buy it anyway.

On a side note with ref to
the police only normaly take cars once you admitt no insurance as if you get the reg wrong when your insuring your car etc it wont be on the system and if they do take the car which im 99 per cent sure they wont
I think you will find there is well over a 1% they chance they will take your car if it pings up no insurance. If it is during the day and they can phone your insurance then sure they would contact them there and then and confirm. However out of hours at the side of the road and it would be more than likely good bye car.

well ive had traders insurance for nearly two years and ive probaly been stoppted more times than youve had hot dinners i would estimate around 50 times in nearly two years they never taken one of mine, as you have to tell them your own cars so the can sumbit the cars on the database but for passing cars dont have to be sumbitted which draws attention to the 5 0 theyve always ended up giving me hort 1 and loadz of em theyve said plenty of times if you carnt prove your insured i will get it towed away my answer was simply ok then take it i will just pop down the recovery yard and get it back tommarrow for free that normally shuts them up

Traders insurance is a bit different. There are many scams nowadays that mean the police will just lift the car and wait for you to prove at a later date its insured, but as i said above this would normally only happen out of office hours.

all set to set off tom am, pick car up and chance it since won't have tax but will be insured and MOTd. Vendor phones to say exhaust manifold is cracked but it will still get me home (about 150 miles). NOw i'm worried it'll break-down and the AA won't work on an untaxed car and then I'll have to leave it and then it will get vandalised or towed.

What do people think?

i think its pretty dumb (nothing personal) to drive with no tax...i think you can get the car taxed with the green slip, and if you have proper insurance and not 1 day then you can deffo get it taxed...dont risk it, it will only be you out of pocket if you do

Do you not have another e30 from which you can accidentally use the number plates and tax disc??

Not that I recommend this or anything.

TBH if you get pulled without tax,the most your likely get is a smack on the wrist,a small fine, and bemade to pay back tax.
I've been pulled quite a few times in the past with no tax, never actually been fined.

Even five years ago,I got pulled in a Merc van,no tax,MOT,insurance or even reg docs, got hauled into court.
The only thing they bothered to "do" me for was the insurance, they didn't give a monkeys about the tax or MOT,got six points and a £150 fine.

Just PMed the owner to see if he can tax it,if not ill just take the chance.
Could do without the £60 fine though :?

pay attention! not too fussed about chancing the fine - its the car breaks down and AA won't tow it, am left in the middle of fecking Licolnshire with the banjos playing and a broken car. Can't believe I've just nipped back from the pub to collect this advice!

I want someone to say that a cracked exhast manifold could not possibly cause the car to break down!

I drove my tourer around for 3 years with 3 of the 4 studs that bolt the exhaust to the manifold broken,it was only held on with one finger tight bolt and a handful of gun gum.
That blew like a bugger! But never caused a problem.
As for AA,never used them,so can't advise I'm afraid.
