Hello!

Just spoke to Lepsons about a refurb on some split rims.

Now, they do do them, but they won't put them back together!

How easy is this to do?

Would I need to put them all back together and then have the tyres fitted?

:)

no expert on this - but i did watch a guy putting a split rim together once - he explained that they're a bit like spoked wheels in that you have to tighten the bolts in a sensible order and to all the same torque give or take to ensure that the wheel stays true. i wouldn't want to try it out on any decent wheels myself...

hope someone else has more detailed knowledge for you.

Diamond Styling Unit Waldo Works, Tenmar Gardens, London, NW10 6BP, England Tel: + 44 (0) 181 969 9690, Fax: + 44 (0) 181 968 8737

I wouldnt try doing it yourself, the mere fact that Lepsoms wont do it means, as said, there is a skilled method to it.

try the above company

Chris is the head man at Diamond Styling. Not sure who else - perhaps call someone like BBS and ask who they recommend?

Without saying they are bad, I've seen a wheel refurbed by Spit and Polish, and one done by Lepsons and the Lepsons one was better.

I want a decent finish if I'm gonna pay lots of money! But thanks anyway mate. :)

spit and polish wont touch split rims or rims that are buckled. iv got another set of rims and am going to give them to diamond styling on thursday kos they can sort 1 of the buckled rims out and then diamond cut them. there not cheap though! but the best job ive seen!

Deep breath, coz this is one massive post!!!

Dave, as you rightly said, Lepsons WILL do them, but they wont put them back together. What you will need are the rubber seals or "gaskets" from BBS or www.felgen-man.de

The REASON Lepsons wont put them back together is that it takes too much time! Its as simple as that! Any d1ck with a torque wrench can put them back together if they get the seals sat correctly and the bolts done up in sequence -
insert one bolt and do it up to touch the rim, then do one up on the opposite side of the wheel. then go 90degrees to that second bolt and insert and do number 3, just to touch. go opposite to number 3, so u have a "4stud" arrangement like the 4x100 fitment of the e30 wheels, except in the rim.
Work in a clockwise manner in this same sequence all the time. doing them up to touch the rim. when they are all in, pinch them down a bit more IN THIS SAME SEQUENCE and work them GRADUALLY up to their torques (you will have to speak to BBS or Felgen-man for these.) As you see, this will be VERY time consuming, and this is why Lepsons arent interested in split rims generally!

Once they are back together, only then can you have the tyres put back on (obviously)

Placey, you have the idea with the spoked wheels - you always work opposite to the bolt you are doing. (im into bike wheel building too, so i know what that guy meant.) It isnt complicated, just time consuming.

Dave again - ive seen rims done by Spit too while at Ants, and ur right, they arent quite as good, but they are slightly cheaper - "pays ur money..."

Panesar, i dont know about Spit not doing splitties, coz i dont know, but they WILL do bent rims! I have seen an bent alpina (genuine one) done by Spit so i have seen the evidence to say that they do, do them (no dig or 'ner-ner ne-ner-ner' intended)

Dave, lepsons will tell you Ԛ£75 per alloy - i know coz i got the same quote.

NP's mate!
Now u know why i didnt get mine refurbed in the end - i didnt have the money to spend on them!

If u want a really REALLY mint job done on them, send them to Germany to Felgen-Man. thats where i was going to send mine and have diamond schwartz centres done, new bolts, new badges and ultra polished rims. That would have set me back Ԛ£760 though when i included delivery... well worth it though! and i WILL have a set of split rims for my sport! im telling u all, i will i will i will MWUHAHAHAHA *cough cough*

scott your right, they will refurb the buckled wheel, but the only finish they will do is the silver finish. i want the diamond cut finish, so diamond styling it it. another company that do splits are phatwheels.com or .co.uk
