I have got a 1989 316i with 112k on the clock. It rattles like a b*tch and is getting on my nerves. I have put up with it for around 3 years but I have decided the time has come to try and fix it. The help and advice I am after is:

1) Is there any point?
2) Can I do it myself in a weekend once I have got all the correct parts. I have done this sort of thing before on an Astra(haha) so I am confident I could do it, but I need the car for work?
3) Can anyone recommend a good supplier of parts (online?) where I could order all me bits?
4) I am assuming that by replacing the cam, followers etc the rattle will go?
5) Is there any point?
6) Should I leave alone, it does run really well.

As always looking forward to your answers you helpful lot,

THanks,

Baz.

new cam for the 1.6 m40 is Ԛ£67 +vat off of GSF

should help it rev more freely.

also check that the oil spray bar aint blocked so you get a coat of oil all over the valves

also try a slightly thicker oil if you're running somethng like semi or fully synth oil

GSF are http://www.gsfcarparts.com

Ԛ£313 to "sort" your M40 sounds a bit much, I personally wouldn't pay that (possibly due to not having the money ) but I guess you can't put a price on a smooth engine

If it's just tappety though maybe just changing the cam would work? It's only 80 quid from GSF and you can get the rest of the kit from Motormec if it doesn't solve the problem...

Ah Man been down this road before.

Make sure you really Know what UR taking on here.
Even a cheap Cam kit from europarts will set you back Ԛ£250

Plus new cam belt then you need a special tool to tension the cam belt.

My advice is to take it to a really good independant garage.
Mine was done at Mosely motorsport and cost about Ԛ£350......(they seem to what they are doing..check their website.)

It were like a new car driving away from Telford, well worth the cash......if you plan on keeping the car that is. Look at it this way Ԛ£350 is proberbly one monthly payment on a top spec new Bimmer.

A cheap and cheerful soulution is to replace the oil spray bar over the top of the cam, these tend to clog sometimes, hence oil starvation. Cost about 11 quid from the stealer....wont completely eliminate the bag of nails sound but might help. Be sure to Replace the oil with a thick Duckhams type.......all this will help hopefully.

However all said and done 2yrs on and 45,000 miles later I can sense the engine is on the cusp of turning back to rattlesville. Soulution: Iam ripping my lump out and sticking in a M42(no more expensive timing belt changes).

Have fun.........Mak
