used the m5 front section, m5 centre bearing and then half way along second section i cut and joined it to the e30 prop.
i inserted a slightly smaller tube inside the second section to hold the tubes central then welded them up.
will probably be out of balance but it will be ok for road testing the car.
the last prop i made was ok up to 120, when you could just start to feel vibrations.

good stuff! u been busy!

theres some fellas called reco-prop that can weld ure prop and balance it for just over Ԛ£100 i think.

Don't use them, you gonna mess the suspension geometry.
I won't be able to explain why in detail in english, but it's impossible to keep a correct geometry suspension with e36 parts on an E30 without heavy modifications.
Use M3e30, it's far better.

Very interesting project

To take rid of the bonnet clearance, will you gonna do a remote airfilter, or just modify the bonnet?

Glenn, what bottom arms are you using? From what I understand the E36 M3 arms push the bottom of the leg further forward to increast the caster. Hence the legs and arms have to be used together. *Think I may have posted this b4 but not sure!*

with that diff and the 6 speed box and if you remove the speed limiter that thing will prob go 200mph+
He would need something like 800bhp+ to hit 200mph (or tp even get close)

i would n't want to do 200 mph in a 15 year old car,
but getting to 155 might be fun!!!

been working on the cooling system this week, so i can let the engine run for a while.
as with most projects, you just cant go to the dealer for a part that doesn't exsist, so nearly everything has to be fabricated or modified to fit.
thought i had the cooling system finished, but when i filled it up with water i had a leak, it was one of the pipes that supply the heater matrix.
had to take the plenum off to get at it, so took a few pics of inside the plenum for those who haven't seen inside it.Image

repaired the heater pipe, it was one of the newer push fit couplins(sp?),
it joins the two banks of cylinders up then "tee's" off for the heater,
must of damaged one of the push fits when i was squeazing the lump in
( it was a tight fit !).
will carry on with the exhaust's next, have decided to go for the same exits as the e39 m5.

thank's to everyone who has given input and support to this project, there's no 'manual' for a project like this . it's been a "suck it and see"
approach. still a long way from being finnished but i'm getting there.
cant wait to raise a few eyebrows at the traffic lights!
bring on the e36 m3, e46 m3 and even the e90 m3.
the zone has it's own ///M...onster

Hi Glenn,

Hope this is of some value to you on your project, if not then good luck in getting the beast onto the raod.

I currently run a E39 M5.

While it is an awesome car it is not without its problems. Heat in the engine bay being one of its main achilles heels.
The MAFs are situated just after the air filtres but directly behind the radiator. This causes false high temp readings, which in turn induces the ECU to retard the engine.

This well known occurance happens within the space of the E39 engine bay which is a little larger than the E30 one.
Some owners in warmer climates fit the ITAS mod which I am not a fan of but they seem to beleive works.
Others have coated the underside of the plenum with heat deflecting material so as to reduce heat soak and to try and keep the 'ram' or induced air being feed into the plenum as cool as possible.

I have run carbon fibre cold air intakes with mixed results, even the regular cleaning of the MAF sensors does little to reduce the problem.

While I understand that you have major fabrication issues and all sorts going on at present, you need to give serious consideration to cold air feeds to the MAFs and also how to improve cold air flow over the engine to reduce 'heat sink' around the plenum chamber.

These issues are also linked to the emission side of things.
If you start disregarding emission sensors and the like you will have a very expensive engine rebuild in no time at all.
The engines are so sensitive to Super Unleaded fuel, that if you run Shell Optimax then use another brand of Super Unleaded, it is almost like driving with handbrake on, all joking aside.

I am not trying to scare monger and I understand your desire to succeed, but while the M5 lump is an awesome animal it can also be very fragile to the point of frustration at times.

So good luck with the project and hope my few pence worth has been a positive contribution.

Regards,

Gorilla.

Nice project, mate. We have one very similar car here in Latvia, the only difference is that it has the body of the e30 m3 (but i dont think there is much difference). I couldnt find any info about the project but i've seen it in action - in the dragrace party. It was clearly seen that the car is not for the 1/8 mile dragrace, there were serious problems with grip at the start. But I've heard that the owner had driven it at 280 km/h (about 175mph) and the only limit was his fear (the roads in Latvia are also in poor condition).... but the sound of a reving v8 is wonderful.
Good luck!

Ok, I'll ask the owner for pics and maybe some description.
My first projest is gonna be the e30 335 with the m30b35 lump in it. Soon i'll start the implantation, now all the preparation process is being carried out. I'll try to post some pics this evening :D

Wicked project, you have some BIG balls!!

I have an E39 M5 and with an eisenmann race exhaust on it with a supersprint xpipe for the centre section - its the scariest engine alive, and pops and crackles like a MF!!

In the damp it wheelspins in 4th, with 275's on the rear, so you may struggle for traction!!

Heres a cheeky vid for ya:-

http://195.172.152.75/fox/pics/foxy1.mpg

I'll follow the thread - be nice to see in person once done!! ( i have an E30 325 as a runaround hence my loitering on the site)

I think that exhaust sounds totally differant from when its being reved and when it pulls away,it's a lot more bassy sounding pulling away under load.

Have you got any video/sound clips with it accelerating ?

Cheers for comments: Unfortunately no vids of it moving yet, i bought a bracket the other day so will get some at the next track day.

It's slightly bassier when driving, especially <2k rpm, but the higher you go, the racier it sounds. Its more to do with the throttle position. You can go along in third and it will be relatively quiet - open throttles anything past half way and it rasps like you hear on that vid - full throttle in the higher revs is a little like a 355 although not as musical of course :P

The best is feathering the throttle when coming down from high revs - it pops and cracks!! :cursin:

Do you think the E30 chassis can take 400hp? Never seen one with that amount of power!!

c ya

i dont undertsand what ppl mean when they say can a car handle the power........ do they mean will the car crack with the torque???? i think not! or do they mean will it just keep on spinning ujp........this depends on wheel width.... ive seen vids of 2 e30s with the same lump (e34 m5) im putting in my 318is, and they seemed fine so Glenn..... of course it will spin up, but thats what makes them fun!

I was thinking more of the chassis - metal fatigues when moved extensively, so im sure over time the twisting of the chassis would have an effect on the long term strength of the metal

anyway, just a thought
cheers

if u run slicks for strip runs this 'may' be an issue.....however on rad rubber it should be fine.... My drivetrain on my sport is currentky unergoing a bit of a resto as the prop UJ was shagged and all clicky and the driveshafts had loadsa play... and this only has 220lbft torque and just over 210hp.....so with these conversions the drivetrain i think is what will have to be assessed eventually as the power takes its toll..... have u seen the size of a diff on something like an e34 m5....its huuuuge...ill be running an e30 3.64 lsd though....so we'll have to see how it holds up... Glenn how did u arrange ure prop again??? did u use an e30 back end and m5 front??? it may be worth doing the whole lot as an m5 section, after seeing what even my sport has done to the drivetrain.... if not.... may be worth knowcking up a few spares.... LOL
