As some of you probably know, my idle hasn't been right for some time.
After a lot of messing about today, i noticed that if i prevent the flap on the AFM from closing too much (by holding it open at the point were it would normally idle) the idle is steady.

Your thoughts ?

It has to be something simple? Sounds like a hose leak.. What's happening exactly does it die all the time or does it do different things all the time?

Stalls repeatedly when cold. stalls when changing gear when cold. Idles like a tractor at 500 rpm when cold.

I cant detect any vacum leaks
The TPS is working fine
the ECU is fine
AFM has been replaced
fuel filter and pump are fine
The injectors and FPR have been replaced
dizzy/rotor are fine
Injector spray patern seems good
ICV is clean and working
rubber elbow has no leaks
blue temp sensor has been replaced (and had a resistance of 3K when cold)
CO mixture is set to 1.2% when hot
compression test shows 14 bar over all 4 cylinders

I have now removed the top cover of the AFM and adjusted the position of the contact arm.
This seems to have fixed the idle when the car is at normal temperature, but ill have to wait to see what happens when its cold.

did it on my 318i cabrio...

Pulled the electric plug out of the ICV let the car run for a short while and plugged it back in. That worked for a while, and then i realised there was a small break in the plastic connector on the engine end of the throttle cable which let it become more loose than normal so tightened that up too... could be something as simple as that.
