Right folks I'm in need of some help, me and the missus are after a new "joint" car.

For economy, I'm after a diesel but for performance it also has to have a turbo.

She's got a thing for golfs so the golf tdi would be spot on, but I'm not keen on them, but I am a big fan of the german build quality. So, in order to persuade her to my way of thinking, are there any BMW Turbo Diesels around 1.9 golf size which would compare?

We're looking to spend between 4-5k

go for the 318tds (E36 Style) good alrounder
or if you can find one the 325td or 325tds great cruiser

If you are after VW Golf size car in diesel and on a budget of around 4 grand you could get a 98-99 318tds compact. Cheap car to run and if your missus don't like big cars she will be fine with this.

i would stay clear of the tds - not as reliable or economical as people think! and slow compared to a golf.

If you dont like the golf - how about a passat td(red I) for 110bhp, or red d&i @ 130bhp. Fast motors an economical too!

There is also the audi a4 tdi - same engine, bit better ride! What sort of reg you after?

May even get a 320d for that money.
Quite quick as is, and chippable to about 200bhp and 288lb/ft iirc.
30bhp and 121lb/ft up on a standard 325i...
Currently slumming it in an E46 Touring
