Chaos wrote:well my traders policy covers me for social domestic and pleasure as well.

i know a guy (friend of parents) who owns a nice sized garage where he selss cars etc.

its a family business and he supplies his wife and kids with cars and insurance throught the company trade policy. All the family members are covered for sdp use, and all work at the garage from time to time.

If swirlys old mans policy allows sdp and swirly is named on the policy then there is absolutely no problem with him using the car.
So E30BeemerLad was right, a normal trader's policy will not cover you for SDP unless you have it added (well maybe it's standard with Chaos's trader's insurance company)....simple really

I can't see where Swirly said he was on his dad's trader's policy anyway - he just said that he's a named driver on a standard policy for the E30.

Quick note about engine swapping, your Engine Number is also on your V5C Form... therefore if you change an engine you ALSO have to inform DLVA of the new number. Now how many people have done that? :)

True mate, although i was planning on buying an is on my 18th birthday anyway, but i figure i would rather stick an is lump in mine as im very pleased with everything else at the moment, rather than looking for new car and then having to do the things ive already done, if you get me.

Jos-
What one is the V5C form? (sorry, not familiar with this). Is it straight forward ,as in just ring them up and give them the new number?

Im going to check round insurance companies tomorow (if there open, doubt it), or in the week. And try to see what the best route is. If all else fails ill just sell mine and in a few months when i was plannin on doing the swap, il buy an IS instead.Dont want to ,but it might be eaiser.

Cheers for all the advice guys.

I was wondering this.

Would it be possible to change the number on the V5 and have it all sorted on the logbook, then just insure it as an is.Cos thats what it will say, and thats what engine it will have, as well as interior etc. Cos it would be a lot easier as ive already got quotes for is's n stuff

just because it has an iS engine in it doesnt make it an iS-therefore ins will still treat it as a modded 318i.

TBH I would just wait a year or so with the 318i and get yourself a year's ncb.. assuming you store the iS engine correctly you can fit it later.

a year for ncb (less if you can get a 10 month accelerator policy) aint too long to wait-and the 318i is plenty powerful for learing the handling of a rwd car.

I know u want more power (think all of us do  ) but sometimes its best to just chill, remember good things come to those who wait.....

Doesnt the insurance company need an engineers report after an engine change? Im doing a 3.5 conversion on my sport and was wondering about the insurance side. I work in a garage and remember a guy had a complete nitemare trying to give the insurance company all the details they wanted, like the chassis no off the donor car etc. :?

Thing is, if they'd seen you do it, they'd know that you'd be more careful than most mechanics!! :)

my last conversion was a mk4 escort that i converted to rwd, insured it with adrian flux.
they asked who did the work, i said myself.
i asked did they need an engineer's report they said no, as long as it had a new mot, that would be fine

Insurance is a strange beast guys.

If you have done mods yourself, sometimes you get a better premium that way as the insurers take the view that you are probably more likely to look after the vehicle if you have put the hard work in yourself, rather than just pulling out the cheque book. Some insurers also ask what cars you have driven/insured in the past, as this gives them an indication whether you are used to high powered RWD equipment, or whether you have just jumped from your 1.2 Corsa and are likely to park it backwards on the first wet roundabout.

I can remember some bizarre cases going on in the early 90's with Sierra Cossies. At one time you could get a lower premium if the car was parked on your driveway or in the street at night rather than garaged. The method behind this was that if the car was garaged, this provided any potential thieves with a safe area to work the locks and alarm system rather than be exposed to nosy neighbours. Wierd!

Hmm Adrian Flux did ask me about my experience with RWD machinary but they didnt seem to be too bothered i bought my conversion instead of build it myself. I hope they take my "experience" with powerful RWD into consideration if and when i downchange to something a bit more modest :x

I tried Flux and HIC but Direct Choice came in best at Ԛ£450 fully comp on a modified 325i (200BHP Estimated power), I'm 30 with full NCD, missus 27. Still more than I would like it to be but what can you do?!

I felt a bit of a burk when I told them I was currently driving a Peugeot 406TD, fookin horrible car!

Still got my Alfa 164 V6 parked in the garage, but the 325 is getting all the attention and money at the mo. Can't bear to part with the Alfa and the missus would probably murder me on the spot if I cashed it in for a couple of hundred quid on Ebay!

Cheers for all the advice guys.Im gonna try and ring around insurance companies tomorow and see whats what.
If it proves to be too much hassel sticking this lump in, ill just sell mine and buy an is.At the end of the day for my own policy at my age, its still a couple of grand on somthing shit like a fiesta, so id rather pay the extra and have somthing i can take pride in and take care of.

If not looks like im stuck with 8 valve wrongness!

Cheers guys
