A local mechanic has offered one of his project cars for sale. Had a look at it and must admit i am tempted but would like some opinions (there are no pics coz i just took a quick gander round it in the workshop, but to all intents and purposes it looks like a 4 door 316i on a j plate. A real sleeper.)

It has full running gear, brakes and suspension from an m3 3.0. He mentioned 80k miles for the engine. The guys a reputable mechanic so its 100%. as a 316i it looks mint, standard interior etc, but all super tidy not a mark on the paintwork. He took a mint 316i and mated it with a write off m3. It comes with 12 months tax and mot and has been SORN stored and maintained since 2003. The interior is all 316i and the alloys are a bit council. Otherwise its mechanically perfect and cosmetically mint.

I know what price he has in mind but would like you guys to give some opinions on it without seeing pictures, just as a ballpark.
Thanks in advance.

£2000, may be a little more.

I wouldn't pay that much for it, the only value is in the running gear, however if bought at the right price it would be a great track car.

A 316 wont have the power needed to use a M3 diff well, its a very long geared diff if I remember rightly.

Only benifet is its a LSD.

If you were to put something like a M44 engine or a 328 engine in then yes it would be a decent car.

But I wouldnt bother as its a 316

Its a full m3 mechanically. Cosmetically its a 316 - aka it has engine box suspension, brakes, exhaust, diff all from a 3.0 m3. Interior and paintwork are 316i.
I can possibly get contact details if anyone wants to contact the seller, however imo hes looking for too much coin. The guesses here of around 2-2.5k are 1.5k short of his price... 8O
I think i'll steer clear personally.
