I am trying to paint my M30 (aluminium alloy) rocker cover without much sucess. Sanded down, degreased and keyed with P100, primed with Special Metals Primer and left to dry.

So 2 hours later I come back and the paint is dry..however it rubs right off the cover again as if it never bothered sticking to it!!

as anyone done this, if so how? Also do you need to use high temp paint, I wouldn't have thought the rocker cover would get that hot.

Thoughts and advice please folkies..

theres a fair few threads in the stying section, but i think the general consencus is a good prep , etch primer and a good quality high temprature paint

there are recomendations for a Harley Davidson paint used for something or other
and another is some type of crinkle effect paint, that a few have tried and can recomend

i used furnace paint (old skool burner style ovens) and a good etch primer

since then ive had wd40, oil, petrol, brake fluid, water, blood sweat and tears on it and it still holds good

I degreased mine with carb cleaner, then i stripped the cosmoline yellow stuf with paint stripper and painted it with VHT wrinkle paint.I didn't use any primer or sand it down.

I got the VHT paint from here

The only problem with it is it takes ages to harden off properly.

I've just got the can out,it has never been used, the only thing wrong is the cap has a split/crack.

How does a tenner to your door sound ?

I love the Royal bank of scotland, just called them up (10:44pm) and they said the money will be with you in two days. (5th cause of bank holiday)

Cool, I suppose powder coating would be the ultimate choice, albeit a little more expensive. I will keep it in mind, thanks.

Has anyone tried spray their rocker cover in a different colour like the body colour? I was toying with the idea of doing mine graphite grey or something instead of the usual black but Im not sure yet.
This is something along the lines I was thinking. Its a picture of my mates CRX Vtec engine.

Ive painted various rocker covers the same colour as my car and I used the paint from Wilco,s that they mix up just ask him to add hardner in the paint mix all I will add is the paint will stick solid to the cover if you prep is right but you need to use the paint made up pretty quick (week or so) as it will thicken in the spray and you can,t use it.Think its about a tenner a can (300ml)
