Batteries are easy to replace, but before you invest in new ones, check that gunge from the old batteries hasn't terminally corroded the circuit board.
Use NiMH batteries for replacement, available from www.cpc.co.uk.
I always use slightly shorter batteries than the originals, known as 2/3 AA size. I've posted the cpc part numbers before, so do a search on cpc and my username.

hi brian & all

checked board and theres no leakage just tried cpc site and its closed down?? is there anywhere else??

the prob seems to keep getting worse ive changed the rev counter but made no diff and have tried a couple of si boards so im assuming theyre all dead as all are old
rev counter when sat on drive seem to work fine nice and smooth up and down but when driving has a habit of sticking around 2500 needle is straight nothin bent also last few days when turn engine/ignition off when gauge needles drop they bounce back up for a split second its really getting irritating now any ideas how to solve these few probs?? all other gauges seem to work fine cheers Daz leeds

Has anyone done the SI bypass?
No more anoying service lights and all the instruments work.

If not, i can try and find the link.

Oh and Ni-MH ??? NiMH batteries are charged differently to Ni-Cd. will they charge correctly?

It's very simple (credit goes to Haber)

Solder a wire link between these two pins.

-------- -x--x-- SI ByePass

You WILL loose the brake wear indicator light and the LED bar, but everything else works fine.

cpc now call themselves www.cpc.farnell.com
Batteries are only trickle charged, so NiMH will work fine.
It's a BMW - everything should work just as it left the factory.

My rev. counter has done that ever since I've had the car (over a year). It never occurred to me that it may be a problem, thought it's probably a charictaristic (sp?). It's certainly never got any worse and I've never yet had any problems with the instrument panel.
