No idea on that one.
My sump is very low and it clears ok, would need either a measurement or a car to try mine on to be certain

i'd be interested but the M30 sump does sit very low too. that's the main reason i'm interested!!!

how much clearance will these have for a sump sitting below the crossmember height?

I will get a measurement of my sump height tomorow, no reason why the guard cant be lowered at the front though, a simple spacer between the mount bracket and chassis rail would do the job.

Having just changed my cracked sump I must say that it's a messy, oily pig of a job and anything that saves me having to do it again sounds like a bloody good idea to me.

I spoke last on monday with him and he hadnt found anything suitable for the plate, problem being the formed bends which is why its so strong for 3 mm plate. Will be going round to his place tomorow to speak some more as I have a day off at last!

Will be posting up tomorow with some more info :D

Looking at the original, I'd say it was formed complete in a press; without serious tooling investment nobody is going to be able to duplicate that. Why not just go to 5mm thick and roll/fold the edges? Should be just as stiff, harder to dent and only a few pounds heavier.

Thats right, it is one big pressing. The bends just increase the rigidity of the piece, the main strength comes from the U shaped tube at the front.

Had a chat today and nothing similar is available off the shelf so once he gets chance (V busy at the mo) he is going to make one up with standard flat plate, with extra plating, maybe some removable alloy chequer plate, over the front bend where it takes all the abuse, as seen on mine :)

Image

The blue highlights the area that will have the extra plating, this is all reinforced by the U shaped tube that sits on the underside of the chassis rails, so it will still be plenty strong enough 8)

Wont be able to give a price until the first piece is completed.

Another idea is to weld plates onto the sump directly, not only will it minimise the weight gained it will also prove to be turned around in a quicker time.

Bit of a pain unless you take the sump off, which is a fairly big pain in itself.
Also, if anything is going to hit the ground hard, I'd prefer it to be a lump of steel, not my engine :)

Yes removing the sump is a PITA

Especially on an M50'd E30, engine up, subframe down, P/S pump removed then you can think about removing the pan bolts.

The way I see it, is you have two choices with a lowered car with low sump pan,

A- one of these guards
B- a dry sump.
