You haven't been taking it too easy I hope.
You need to get the cylinder pressures up to get the rings to bed in properly - but I'm sure you know that already.
Yet another 2.7 question

Of course, but initially I was very scared - with the amount of time, money and effort gone into the engine I treated it carefully incase it went bang

After the money you spent I can see why! I bet that (almost) extra litre and 2 cylinders really make themselves known lower down the rev range.
E30's don't weigh as much as E36's so I reckon you could 'do' 325/328is quite easily.
As for crank bearings, you have to check the type and the size as don't know until it's apart if the crank has been ground etc.
My plan of attack is going to be get the donor motor, open it up and see whats what, order rings/shells/pump/seals & gaskets then clean up the engine and paint it, might change the core plugs too if I'm feeling picky (no real benefit apart from looks - lol) then get the parts, fit them, get the head on and all the ancillaries etc, clutch, gearbox etc and swap them over.

If you pop the core plugs out you can pressure wash much of the water jacket, get all the crud out so it's cooling properly. The core plugs tend to rust too.Andy_magic wrote: might change the core plugs too if I'm feeling picky (no real benefit apart from looks - lol)

I forgot to put that I might have the block chemically cleaned, but they could be rusty.
The trouble with projects for me is to know when to stop spending money. Costs can soon spiral out of control, hence me not wanting any machine work done.
I'm working with a pretty slim budget but the spannering I'll do myself so should save a bunch there.

I want to do the spannering my self (well I will) and I can get some machining done cheap rate, so hope fully I will be able to keep costs down. It seems silly for me to find a 2.0 engine when I already have a 2.5 spare, I suppose the costs will spiral with things like the clutch and other stuff that is silly not to replace when the engine is in pieces.

It would be interesting to see how they preform when finished.
As I've got the 2.0 head (recent recon) I'm going that route, but will have to source a load of bits to do it right.
I reckon both versions will be serious fun which is what matters.

guys i have a 325isport - and am collecting a 525 e bottom end this week - plan on using the pistons/top end from my 325i and bolting it onto 525 e block AFTER i have decked the 325i block.
1 - any idea how much block needs decking using 325i pistons/head?
2 - i could get 320i head with complete 525eta engine - i assume this is much simpler as a bolt together exercise assuming i use inlet manifold /cam etc from 325i - but results in less top end power as ports on 320i are smaller? does anyone know if this makes a noticeable difference to using the 325i head/pistons? - or is this neglible?
3 - does anyone know what schrick cam has greatest duration which can be used in a 2.7 conversion without machining pockets in pistons etc?
4 - anyone got any pics of a well ported 325i head as a pointer - before i trash mine
?
thanks ross
