so we dont send to far off topic
M40's rule
A standard 316 is a good car if right and they are not that slow again if right I have never driven a 316 touring though and should imagine the extra weight slows it. they are not an inferior car to a 325 just designed for a different purpose.

Got a 316 Touring & it's fine for what it is.
If I'd wanted more power I'd have got a 325 but that's not what a 316 is about. It's cheap to insure & good on fuel. Needs more gear changing around town due to lack of torque but it's fine on the open road & is still fun to drive. Horses for courses etc.
If your motor's knackered & you're after a bit more power then source a good 318 which will drop straight in. Better still find a 318iS motor for an instant 30% power increase. The Touring version gets the 325 suspension & brakes (discs all round) so can handle the extra power but even the standard car is ok.
A word of warning though. If you're wanting to go hooning around then sell it & buy a 325. Don't get a 316/318i & then ask everyone how to get 175bhp from it with a filter & a rechip. It just doesn't work.

I own a 316i Auto 3 door
It won't win any races but is fairly econmical.
At the moment it is averaging about 37MPG on my 80 mile commute so can't complain
And it is in tidy condition.
It has to have a new cam in it before I put the new hydraulic tappets in. (Rattles like a taxi....LOL)
Waiting to fit a Tek2 kit to it once I get it painted.
And desperatley need some 15" BBS to finish it off.
But there is nothing available localy (Cumbria)!!

My latest E30 is a 1991 Vulcan Grey 316i coupe.
Searching for the m50 engine........
Searching for the m50 engine........
I have a 316i....it does the daily commute of 60miles with no problems....
but will be replaced by a 325cab as this time next years as i'll have finished college by then!
It's not a sports car, and i don't think it is for even one moment....it's built for a reason, and that's what it's used for!
But in a choice between this and any jap car....it was quite obvious which one i was going to buy..
[and it only cost me £150

I'm happy with my 316i Touring.
It looks nice, drives well and has lots of potential if you want to modify it.
At the end of the day, it's still a BMW and has the build quality one expects of Teutonic engineering.

I must admit, I have toyed with the idea of a little extra power, so odered a K&N airfilter. It's not on yet, but from what people have been saying on here, it won't give much if any extra power. It's not all bad though: I hear they sound pretty good
Might try a chip later, as I've seen some on ebay for about 20 quid; they seem to have had some good feedback, although what power gains could be expected for certain, I don't know. Think the 316i is around 100bhp as standard, so wouldn't mind about 120............
