sorry i dont know what E number it is, anyone got one? Am thinking of buying one but unsure of what they're like, seen a few 540i's for £5000ish I'm guessing they're pretty rapid, insurance is ok for me what about servicing etc
and what sort of fuel consumption can i expect? My right foot isnt overly heavy

A mate of mine has an E39 530d. Very rapid for a derv and still returns a good mpg.

I'd stretch the budget a bit and get a 525/530d rather than petrol.

Early (ish) model TDS but you can get 2000s and newer for a few quid more

They are called e39's and we've got a 1999 523SE (which is actually a 2.5) Touring. with MTEC kit..
Bought it off a mate who'd had it 3 years and it had been pretty reliable few electrical gremlins - alarm, lights etc but mechanically 100%. Does about 32 mpg on a motorway cruise... 25 on mixed.
Seem a pretty good buy at the moment....
White 318iS, 2.7 conversion, LSD, H&R cup kit, ARBs, F&R strut braces, full cage, kevlar buckets, wilwood 4 pot brakes, braided hoses, 6pt harnesses, f/glass bonnet, Toyo 888's, scorpion, polybushed, carbon cards and boot lid.

I Say if you can stretch go for the 530d

3.0 turbo Deisel pumps out 184bhp reasonably quick
with very good mpg

Servicing wise diesels are cheaper than petrols

If you prefer petrol the 530i is a good alrounder
with 231 bhp and a mpg of around late 20's early 30's

i have a 528i sport 2000 and its a top motor! :drive: i get about 33mpg on motorway and thats at a steady 90mph or so.diesels are a great car but i prefer the sound of the petrol 6cyl.the police even use them up here aswell.they have to be good, reliable and quick enough to carry two 6 foot plods and all there traffic gear! i think the 540 fuel bills would be big and the v8 wasnt bm's best.i know a guy who has one and its forever at the garage.up 2 u tho
good luck :thumb:

Go for the 530d, it's a top motor. Quiet, comfy, economical and fast.

A friend of mine has a T reg one and he's had it chipped (now 230bhp, 350lb/ft torque) and it's a darn site quicker than my 325 and does 45mpg on a run.

as said the E39 530d Sport is the one to go for. get the post 2001 models as these have a better spec for the money, look better inside and out and are just generally nicer.

At the end of the day, they're amazing cars. How many other cars do you know that got voted best all round saloon, every year, for its entire production life
