I Was driving home from work today and spotted this parked up in a haulage yard so i thought i'd do some investigation! Managed to find the owner so asked him about it and he seem to think that it was fairly rare but only used it as a daily runner. He's owned it 4 years and bought it from a guy who had this and a 6 series with "M3 bits on it" which i can only assume to be an m635csi, sitting unused in a front garden covered in green sh*t. Anyway, i had a quick look round it and from what i could see it needs a pair of rear arches, o/s/f door, scuttle panel and a few other scabs seeing to before a repaint. I know this will prob escalate but looks reasonably solid and was mot'd. It still has the wheels, steering wheel, gear knob, front and rear spoilers, badges, supension and a pretty good condition sport seat interior. 114000 miles but no history. The bottom line is i asked if he was interested in selling and he said once he got back from holiday he'd put it through an mot and go from there.

Anyone recognise it?

I don't know what to offer him? Mint between £2-3000 and this one is far from that but i dont wanna take the piss.

yeah me too. As you said it needs a bit of work just to tidy it up. it would be great looking car with the right bit of tlc, wave £800 in his face and see what he says. You never know what you might find MOT or not. :D

Careful, sounds like it has all the E28 problems....did you open the bonnet and have a look at the top of the inner wings? Not too certain, but I reckon that the 2.8 just had the Alpina trim, and the stock motor...the real macoy is the 3.5...still very tempting at the right money.

Yeah, I'd tread carefully here. It could be hiding all sorts of horrors. However, put it into perspective..

It may "only" be the 2.8 BUT it is a genuine Alpina. Crap and rocking horses spring to mind and when will be the next time you see a genuine Alpina e28 let alone for sale. Which brings me to the next point. A grand. Not a lot of money for a rare genuine car regardless of condition. Look at that early c2 e30 thats been on eBay recently. That was "only" the 2.5 and the guy was looking at breaking it and it went for £1200 notes. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %26fvi%3D1

Then you've got the owner. He knows it might be a bit speacial but actually it sounds like he knows sweet FA (M3 bits on a 6?). Theres a chance that if you offer him a grand, he'll think your mad and tear your arm off, laughing all the way to his next millwall game (sticker in rear window says it all).

Could also be a VERY practical classic for the family Barry. Your sport is lovely and I did say don't sell it. However, get £3500 for it it could finance a rare e28?????

Looks real enough and the badges are correct as are the spoilers. As for bodywork I wouldn't worry about the rear arches, just give then a wire bush and waxoyl before adding a set of the plastic M535i arches. The rest you can do with an aerosol can - no point in throwing money at it.
According to BMW it's Alpine white 1 with anthracite cloth, sports seats, LSD, manual overdrive box, manual sunroof, lecky windows front and rear, central locking. The seats and diff suggest it it's probably a B2.8 as Alpina fitted their own suspension. It was supplied new by Dandal in Wakefield who are still around but it was probably converted by Sytners before it was delivered. It was built and registered in August 84 so it may have been registered first by Sandal and driven to Sytners. My C1 2.3 was supplied new by Browns in Hereford (now Cotswold) but converted in Nottingham.

The B2.8 spec was wheels, spoilers, suspension (samed Bilsteins and springs as the B9) plus steering wheel, gearknob and the B9 exhaust. The engine is totally standard 184bhp but the exhaust was reckoned to take that up to about 192 bhp. They were based on the standard 528i not the SE to keep the price down. They were a fraction cheaper than the 528iSE yet only 20 were sold.

i''ve got to say i like it but i think i would open the negotiations lower - it isn't cheeky just sensible. if the guy knows nothing then he would be happy with £500 for his sh1theap.

when buying something, start as low as you think you can get away with without being punched but do it with a twinkle in your eye... you can always raise your offer... slowly...

With an MOT I'd have it for £7-800. As long as the body isn't shafted it's got potential to be a decent old smoker. I'd be adding the fat blue and green Alpina stripes though :D

Andyboy says "no point in throwing money at it" but i can't see doing anything else if you want it to look/go halfway decent I could be wrong but this has got money pit written all over it It's a rare thing and it would be nice to save it but a cheap run around it is not.

I been discussing this with my better half and as soon as i mentioned buying another project she was not to pleased, i still have a fiesta rs turbo that need sorting and selling! I managed to talk her round because of the rarity of it and its something ive always liked! I think i'm gonna go in with an offer of £500 and go from there beause it is quite ratty. As for it being a bottomless pit project yes it will be expensive but i work in a bodyshop so panel and paint labour costs will be low ie mates rates and the rest i can do myself along with discounted parts wont be to bad. I would only do it properly not just lash it up and smoke it about but if and when the guy wants to deal i will inspect it thorouly for rot but from what ive seen its not to bad.

That is a beauty!

I had a non- Alpina E28 528i, was a joy to drive and after 175,000 miles still regularly saw 140+ on the speedo!

Sooo easy to be a sideways hooligan in too! winkeye

I'd like another one.

Martin.

Gay Boy. :D

Full fat stripes or nothing - liking the idea of gold though. Check out the stripes on my old red beast!
A B2.8 will not be a money pit. The engine and box are standard 528i and there isn't a single part on that car that will cost more than £100.

Check for the Alpina Plaque on the dash

If not there then not a proper Alpina if not sure speak to Sytner Nottingham they were the original Alpina Impoter/Convertors give them the chassis number and they can check.
