seen it happen on a Nova also.. Tis why if you want to go properly light you need to be buying an ali flywheel.. Sure it costs but it wont explode on you

Just think of the damage that'd do to your ankles if one sploded in an E30! :(

Thats a vauxhall twin-cam engine, a C20LET looking at the last pic's (intercooler and turbo elbow).

 that looks very expensive and totally agree with the E30 comment

Looks like a Nova slam panel with the dodgey bonnet catch spring, obviously had the turbo wound right up 8O

When I first started driving and modifying Minis (a little while ago now!), I heard stories of drivers totally losing feet when flywheels broke up. 8O

I've had many flywheels lightened by engineering companies, never had a problem, but you can go too far. Or take metal from the wrong places etc. Especially putting monster power through them.

scary!

i'e heard of a semi-local oval racing chappie who lost his feet when one on a pinto racecar let go...

you can get kevlar jacket type things in drag racing circles to stop parts like diffs and blowers detonating and taking out the driver and spectators!

Its mainly high rpm that causes flywheels to explode.

hence naturally aspirated race engines being the main victims.

If it's been done by someone who knows what they're doing Max, it'll be fine.

Mate of mine's dad lost an entire flywheel through the bonnet after shifting at high speed from 5th to 2nd instead of 4th. Apparently it disappeared through the bonnet and was never seen again!

by the look of that damage it shattered, never lighten a cast iron fly wheel, only use proper steel or ali ones.
