Ok the car has one red/green wire, when i connect this to the red on the stereo and plug the main big black proper plug thingie in, i can get the tape surround to light up when i turn the stereo on. I also attatched the brown wire on the car to the black wire on the head unit, nothing seems to change, i am then presuming the blue is ignition live, but on the car there are 2 blue wires and on the head unit it is only 1. The rest of the wires are speakers then? if i can get the earth live ignition right i guess the rest will work itself out, as i cant start a fire with speaker wires right? :?

You do not need a test meter! Meters give totally misleading results on unloaded circuits, and in the hands of persons who are not familiar with them. Just use a 12 volt 5W lamp on a couple of pieces of wire.
A front indicator repeater from a scrap E30 is ideal.
