***disclaimer***This is what I did, not what you should do, I make it up, and I choose components that I like the sound of, not what the internets say are the best****

So.

Think pimp my ride, strip everything out and try not to break the clips that hold the kick panel bits on the carpet by the door ( how f***in strong are they btw?? 8O )

Image

Image

Remove the ski hatch if you so desire, and I do have a hint here, DO NOT put your head in the boot and hit it repeatedly with a hammer, the noise will cause your ears to ring two days later... You have been warned.. :hammer:

Image

Bit of trial fitting to see if it will work

Image

Get stuck right into that wiring, strip all the old cack out.... oh, and very importantly, label all the wires with masking tape and a pencil (or pen, I don't mind)

Image

When re-wiring, try and be neat, it'll make you feel better... 8)

Image

If you are going into the door, take your time, it's an arse of a job and you don't want to do it twice...

Image

At this point, take a break, have a cherry flavoured soft drink and wonder why you started...

Image

I find that for testing the wiring choccy block is great, but try to solder the permanent joints (it probably doesn't matter actually) I put in new coax's under the retro covers purely for the rare rear passenger listening to audio books on long journeys...

Image

Take time to celebrate the small victories

Image

When it gets dark, go and work on your girlfriends floor, see if you can get her to rustle up a cold beer and a couple of enchiladas. It helps.

Image

From here on in, I got bored of taking photos, not many to go...

Here's why you bother...

Image

And the finished * product in place...

Image

Image

It'a a Blaupunkt digital headunit running DAB through an adapted BMW electric aerial and a 60gb ipod in the glovebox. The headunit internal amp drives the rear co-ax's when needed. Alpine amp bridged to a 10" JL sub in a sealed enclosure through rear seat foam. Front components are Kenwood in adapted tweeter pods and customised audiosport door pods, the crossovers are where the old speakers were.

Cheers, James

* I say 'finished'..... Actually, the doors are coming back out, I mounted the pods about 5mm too low and I need to seal a couple of vent holes... AND I'm going to put a false boot back to hide all the wires. But when you're making this many changes, it's all a bit trial and error :D

Nice install....i like the fact that you've made a good all round install, as opposed to some who concentrate solely on the bass...

did you make the door pod speaker holder things yourself, or did you buy them? How much of a difference do they make to the sound? I want my car to look as stock as possible on the iside, and unless there's a massive difference, i'll be keeping the speakers in their current locations.

Currently, hmm, needs work, getting some venting from the door pods that needs killing and I might 'thin' the foam in the rear seat to get more puch from the sub...

still, compared to standard...

They make a big difference, but it depends, you'll get good results from a decent pair of components in the stock locations it just wont be 'as' good. As you've said, it's a copmpromise, try putting some new comps in and see if you're happy :)

I bought them but adapted them quite a bit.

Very nice mate!

One question though, while you had everything out why did you not soundproof all the panels (dynamat etc)

The only thing worth sound proofing at this level would be the doors. If you put too much sound proofing in it will weigh the car down too much for only a small benefit.

Because old chap, the door would have been a pain to do and.... Yes, it would have reduced the road noise but the door pods are sealed units, nowhere near any metal. The sub is in a 1 cuft sealed box, it's not mounted to the boot metal, I tested it at full wack and it doesn't move the seat back.

So, it wouldn't have made any difference to the install sound.

You can get this....but it's rubbish...it's really messy as it comes out the can all spluttery.

I've used it, but don't think it made all that much difference....save your money, and buy some proper stuff for the area's that need it.

Depends on your speakers, some need free air so cut away, some are designed to be sealed.

On the bulkhead near the fuse box is a large grommet with a selection of holes in it ready for you to choose from.

Under the back seat on the left hand side of the car is a factory earthing point, I used this.

As stated in the post
Came from Audiosport
They sell on ebay for £65 plus delivery
Considered this option for my Touring but you can only fit a speaker with up to 65mm mounting depthIIRC(did email to check).
Made my own in the end.
