Can anybody help me? I want more power from my 325i se its been on the rolling road and only came back with 164bhp. The engine has got 155.000 on it why do you think its so down on power would an engine swap help and if so what engine and how much would it cost. I would like 250bhp but i dont want to break the bank to get there. Also whats the best type of air filter i have a k&n panel filter are these anygood. I have heard if i put a 328 engine in and a couple of bits off a m50 325 engine i can up the bhp a fair bit that way how true is that? any help what so ever would be great cheers. :D

I think rolling road power is at the wheels, unless it has been corrected. If it has been corrected then it depends on the % loss they used to correct. It should be somewhere between 15 to 20% although I have heard figures from 10% to 25% and it depends on the type of transmission, automatic or manual.

I think the K&N panel filter should be ok. Most people recommend against a pod type filter unless it properly shielded and even then it might not give any gains.

I think in general poeple say a chip/remap, 6 branch/headers/extractors, and a throttle body give the biggest gains.

An engine swap would give the best improvement but probably cost the most. Look for a thread titled "The most powerfull 2.5" or something like that. I think people there said if you are going to an M50/52 you might as well get an M3 3L or 3.2L, depends on how much power you want.

You do know that a brand new 2.5 M20 engine produces 171bhp right?

your power figures seem right to me.

To get more power, you can either turbo/supercharge your engine or increase its displacement to 2.7 litres.

Its all limited by the size of your wallet

164bhp is very good for a late engine! Not many late engine ever made the claimed 171bhp.

If you want more power do some serious research. Think about what you want in terms of power delivery.

2.7 will give torque everywhere and a properly made one will achieve 220bhp

Turbo will give massive midrange power and ultimtaley will be a quicker car than a 2.7

Wait for around 6 weeks, there are a few turbo projects which will be completed.
