im not totally convinced
someone once bought one off me from a 320 took it home and it wouldnt fit
we compared with 2 more i had and iirc 1 had a different amount of teeth on it

My 320i and 325i are both post '88 and '89 models, so may be lucky, but alot of time in stripping to find out its wrong...

I bought the 325i se in the pic below (20 years old), had it sat on my drive for a year and half. Did a fluid change, engine, gearbox and diff, then thrased the car through europe on the Scumball 300 Rally for 4 days.
Not only did it not skip a beat it out performed all the porsches and older sports cars and overall won the endurance side of things.
A good suspension setup, great tyres and the rest was up to the old girl, and she did us proud...
A truelly execellent marker under the BMW cap.
