Hiya mate!

Went and got the last remaining bits like gaskets and filters ready for the big swap tomorrow.

Finished off cleaning the engine bay today, nothing too spectacular but will still look pretty good.
Got footy in a bit so that's the rest of the day out of the window! Really wanna get the engine and gearbox bolted up tomorrow so I can then just work on the wiring and ancillaries during the week (and I need to give the crane back!!)

Jimbob that engine has an M50 manifold so with 2.8 internals 84mm bore / 84mm stroke it should have well over 200bhp!

The later model M52B28 that my brother has in his compact ran a 220 with M50 manifold, BBTB, Eisenmann backbox, Z3 2.8 mid section, stock intake with early M3 intake snorkel (takes air from the brake duct). After a remap it was up to 236 with a big slab of extra torque in the midrange.

More here: http://www.e30zone.co.uk/modules.php?na ... ic&t=50101

There some good pics showing the difference between the stock M52B28 manifold and the replacement M50 one.

That's a wicked thread, and some bloody nice results as well.

I was ill last weekend and a lot of last week, then had a Stag weekend so no progress has been made, pretty busy for the next couple of days so the next (and final!) battle will be at the coming bank holiday - my brother's wedding is soon and would like to go up in the BMW rather than the trusty Escort estate :?

Lads, what the f*ck!

This 5 series sump I've got won't line up with the block properly for the bolt holes.

It appears to be the oil catch guard on the inside of the sump (taken the E36 one which attaches to the block separately off) - did anyone else have this problem? Looks like a case of drilling it off and putting the E36 one back on!

I know with the S50 conversion that bit is left off, well it is on mine anyway - thinking about it, my M50 sump didnt have a guard fitted, but I did remove the S50 one. Im fairly sure its the same with the M50/M52s.

Andy, just to make sure - theres no way that sump would fit your engine with the guard in place? The guard would hit and stop it from fitting so you couldnt get the bolts in?

Ive just looked at the ETK and theres two part numbers for pre and post 94 E34 M50s (both 520i and 525i) - maybe the early ones had the guard and the later ones didnt. I bought my sump new and ordered it for a 95 525i and it definitely didnt have the guard.

It definately wont go on with that guard in place as i tried, then realised it had to be removed as it wouldn't mate up as it was touching the crank and bearing caps.
Mine was definately from a 520,not sure of the year.

Thats all I wanted to hear :thumb:

I know 100% that my M50 sump didnt have the guard fitted, but you know what its like when someone posts a pic - that few seconds of doubt

Off topic - I got those wheels Andy, will PM you a quick question :thumb:

Managed to get hold of a drill a few hours ago..managed to drill the rivets and get the guard off.

Then took a while to clean it all out, and fix into place with the engine on the crane.

I was given e34 535i mounts and due to the way they angle in the engine legs won't fit on correctly so I've had to leave the engine hanging in the engine bay just resting on the top of the mounts.

Best be ordering some e28 m5 ones tomorrow then!

jimbob.

what do you know about connecting the wiring loom.
is it just a matter of plugging it in at the bulkhead of the e30 and away you go.
and changing the ecu of course.

Haven't got round to the headache of wiring yet...but as far as I'm aware there's a different you have to take depending pre or post-facelift cars.

If yours is a pre-facelift then I have a spreadsheet that I will post a link to when I upload it in a bit :)

Ordered the e28 m5 mounts this morning @ £25 each.

Both of my local dealerships (1 is about 4 miles from home the other is about 20 from work!) wanted chassis numbers or part numbers :x I phoned ECP as they stock one of the mounts and the bloke was good enough to give me the BMW part number to go back to the dealers, should arrive on Thursday.

Won't be able to do too much really as its my brothers wedding this weekend so back on hold for a bit!

Hmm what a slow progressing conversion...!

After going mental and spending £50 on M5 mounts that I didn't even use I finally got the engine in (with a lot of swearing!) me and my mate Dean got the engine bolted on the mounts, yay! :D :D

I used the e34 535i mounts in the end with a bit of modification, the e25 m5 mounts were seriously not having it, and the 535i ones looked like they could with a bit of persuasion :) so if anyone is interested I have a set of M5 mounts which retail for nearly £60! I just want shot of em..

It took just over an hour I reckon with 2 of us, a lot of fiddling and a lot of lifting it back off the mounts and adjusting. Even had me standing on top of the engine !!!! Wish someone had taken a photo..got some dodgey looks off people coming out of the road opposite my house.

Looks as though it came straight from the factory:
Image

And the infamous exhaust manifold and steering UJ combination (its actually cleared at the moment by 1mm!!!!):
Image

Hopefully get some help this weekend to fit the gearbox and then go from there.

You dropped it in without the gearbox? 8O

Good luck getting the box on mate, not something I would attempt TBH, especially on the floor.

You were fitting the mounts in the outer subframe holes/slots right?

I was going under the guidance of my mechanic who is doing the exhaust modifications, he also said he'll fit the gearbox with me and his son (Dean). This will be the 3rd gearbox I've done from underneath, the first was on an S13 and the other on an S14a!

Tried to use the original holes for the 535i mounts to start with, then got the M5 mounts in the outer hole/slots and gave up then struggled like f*ck with the 535i mounts in the slots and eventually got it bolted up :)

on the s50 you put the drivers side rectangular mount in the outer hole then i think the passenger side mount goes in upside down. Not sure if the m52 is the same.

I used these - E28 M535i

They went on easy, first time into the outer holes, I dropped the subframe off on Monday when I replaced the oil pump and it went straight back onto the mounts no messing.

Im pretty sure the round rubber mount is the same height and stud offset as those, just a bit softer I would imagine
