A c reg saloon will be a lot quicker as its lighter and has the early engine your new one may be down on power anyway so its just about getting it right and checking some of the above.

Don't modify a faulty engine. Get it running perfectly in standard form, then modify.

just a thought, but is it possible that its the airfilter causing the problem? its had a k&n cone filter fitted by the previous owner. my local (ish) rolling road place reckons they're crap and you get better performance with the standard airbox. anyone any thoughts on this? i was wondering if it's getting too much air which is probably warm air anyway as theres no air feed pipe thingmejigger going to it. its not the greatest fit either. you can easily pull it off by hand no matter how much you tighten it. thanks again guys. you've all been great!

'Tis true! Mine had a K&N on when I bought it. I couldn't put my finger on it, but it just didn't run "right". Took the K&N off and reverted to standard and it was fine.
I'm not saying it's the whole answer to your problem(s), but it seems to be the obvious starting point.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

thats good to know! and another thing (ffs i hear you say!) the fuel pump sounds quite noisy. possibly on its way out and not giving enough fuel?
