That's good stuff!

I get most of my oil through Vauxhall motor factors. I've always put 10w40 in but I think the application books now suggest 10w30...

Same here - how much do you pay for 5l then? I get mine for £15 as the owner of the local carbits shop used to work down the pit with my dad, so I get things cheap :D

I've always used 10w40. Thinner stuff flows easier, but I'd worry about it being so thin it gets past the seals

Wear in the block!!! You got a Ford engine in your E30? Everything in a 200,000 mile M20 engine that I stripped once was still within new spec., and I expect this is typical of most BMW engines.

Castrol high mileage is mineral.
Castrol Magnatec 10w40 is semi.

Same as Dan. Use the vauxhall trade club deals for oil. Used to use their semi synt(10w40) in my 325. Now put their fully synt in my s4. Its 5w30 I think, i know its not the best, but its an old engine, it doesn't need none of this £50 a tub oil 8O And at £13 odd quid(it might be less) you can't go wrong.

Fully synthetic oil is for newer engines, not an ancient engine like the M20.

M20 can benefit from full synthetic oil, just like any other engine.

My 325 lives on a diet of Mobil 1 (synthetic 5w50). It had a tatty old yellow post-it note stuck in the service section of the owners manual "Mobil 1 only !" so that's what I've stuck with. Previous owner did oilchange every 5000km, and I've kept it up during my 3 years of ownership so far..

Magnatec 10/40 in mine since it was re-built 4500 miles ago, seems to be the most popular by the looks of it.

Semi seems the way to go, best of both worlds.

My dad uses a full synthetic on his aston martin, so its would just be handy for me to nick some of him winkeye

Plus my engine only has around 45 to 50,000 miles on it, so would it not benefit from a fully synthetic?

it depnends on how your engine is and what you use your 325i for?

i ran my old sport in sikolene pro s for 35,000miles and it ran better for it by the end

semi's and mineral oils brake down and allow engine wear when the car is driven hard on the road or track end of! where as a puckka fully sythetic oil with esters in it will stay as it should and protect when the oil temp gets high during hard usage. Even long motorway trips with the revs up for hours on end will get the oil really hot and cheap oils will start to breakdown and allow bottom end wear. It's a testiment to the M20's build quality that it will do the miles if it gets it's oil changed now and then with any old sh!t put in it. As alot of other engines won't put up with this treament!

the age of the M20 has nothing to do with it!
