im going to convert my cab to a 2.7, it currently has a m40 1.8i engine in there which has the worn cam problem so sounds abit like a tractor lol
the car has a auto gearbox on it
i will be puting the 2.7i engine in with a switchable auto gearbox what parts are different
i know the rad is different needs to be swaped
are the oil coolers the same?
i will be swaping the diff and prop from the other car that the autobox is coming from
is it hard to get the switchable auto box to work with my car
i will need to get the wiring and ecu and switch from the other car is there any other bits that i need to make it work as the engine is coming from one car and the gearbox from another i know i will need the torq convter from the auto car

all looking good so far!
Spigot bearing is in the centre of the crankshaft from the flywheel end.
Time honoured way of getting them out is to completely pack the end of the crank with grease, taking care not to leave any air pockets, and then to find a piece of parallel sided round bar (parallel pin punch, large bolt, etc.) that is a close, but loose, fit into the bearing centre hole.
Put the bar into the hole and whack the free end with a large hammer. The bar and bearing will act like pistons, and the bearing will be pushed out.
The switchable auto box needs the engine to be fitted with a different throttle position switch (with a different connector) than the one fitted to the engines in cars with ordinary auto or manual boxes.

Brian: I swapped the switchable auto box from my 325i engine to a manual one and fitted the engine into my 318iS. Does this different throttle position swith have any implications for me?
DJ_4BL: I have a MINT 65,000 mile autobox and all associated wiring, ecu, prop etc still in my 325i if you're interested. It was a sweeeet box when the car was running (off the road getting S50B32 power atm).

You'd be better off painting the block with black engine lacquer rather than high temp spray.
It's available from halfrauds in a tin, it's brush on type stuff.
Cheers,
Iain T

No problems using the switched auto engine loom and TPS on a manual car. The auto TPS has extra bits on it that just won't be used.jaistanley wrote:Brian: I swapped the switchable auto box from my 325i engine to a manual one and fitted the engine into my 318iS. the engine that had the switchable auto box on it

so far i have fitted the fly wheel on to my engine will fit the torq converter tomorrow
how do i go about filling the box once its fitted in the car along with the engine?
i didnt know the torq converter carried that much fluid the bloody thing started dripping when i took it apart lol

heres a few pics of the conversion
i have droped the new engine back in the car in one peice with the switchable auto box attached
jus finshed wiring the engine wiring up and connecting all rad pipes, fuel lines, and gearbox oil cooling lines
currently fitting the 3,64 diff and subframe with all new mounts as the old ones where worn
still need to put oil cooler, connect prop to gearbox and diff then fit gearbox ecu and loom then all done
then jus need to service the engine and bleed and check fluids
the conversion is going a bit slow as the weather is bad its been raining too much meant to be summer lol
heres the pics

il be adding more pics as i have had more progress since these have been taken sets in there very nice and looks great

Looks great Bal.
I know a lot of hard work has gone into this one.
After driving your car with that VERY tappy 1.8 i would say this has come just in time!! Should be ready for summer
