325i reshell + m50
Moderator: martauto
now if anyone says search, i have and the info is like a jigsaw puzzle
basicaly im sourcing a mint 318 and wishing to reshell a rusty mot failed 325sport.....keeping drivtrain from 318 as spare for next year pbmw championship.
now im seriously considering a m50b25 due to being cheap and as the lots gotta come out, why not?
basicaly whats the best doner....late e34 525i or early e36 325i?
which diff is best used?can a 525iS diff be used if not then what lsd will fit with correct ratio?
gearbox?prop?linkage
rad/abs pump/brakes?
the engine mounts for e30m50 are the same in the e34 arnt they, as the e34s were made with both m20 and m50?
only want to use one donor car and have to source as little 'extra' parts as possible....soo which is the most usful donor?dont mind having to break a 325isport as well for rar discs and interior, but i suppose the lsd will be wrong ratio?
my rebate is finaly here and so im finaly going to start the e30 project
hope you peeps can set me straight on these few things

Best diff to use is from an E30 M3.
Another servo option is the unit from a Clio with the master cylinder left on, straight swap no faffing, brakes as good as standard.
E34 would be the best donor to use, preferably an auto as it would of had a lot less of the thrash treatment.
The best rad to use is from the E36 M3.
E34 525 or E36 325 manual box.
Prop depends on the output flange of the gearbox you get, the smaller flange can be coupled to an M20 prop.
E36 325 linkages.
E36 323/328 tubular manifolds are easiest to modify for the E30 engine bay.
As Brian stated, E21 gearbox mounts, E36 325 alloy engine mount arms, E28 M5 engine mount rubbers.
P.S. I have the alloy arms and manifolds you will need

I have question regarding this, can I use the gearbox and diff fitted to my 87 sport with an M50?

Pretty sure a few guys have gone this route.tristan325 wrote:I have question regarding this, can I use the gearbox and diff fitted to my 87 sport with an M50?
A few have definately done it with the M42(iS) box.
Think its just a case of getting the flywheel machined?
Using the original E30 box also means you can retain the standard(more common) E30 diffs available!

Sensor holes are included in the price, although the sensors themselves are an extra £20

Best solution for the frontpipe is to use one from a 3 piece E30 system so you dont need to modify the centre or rear sections.
You know what the arms are like yes?

well im thinking of julians touring...needs lamba hole welded into manifold (buy yours less hassle) and also needs a servo for clearance....maybe you have one?but i guess postage would be crazy, breakers yard jobbie i guess!
he says he used e36 non vanos with g'box..and used standard gearbox mounts??is that ok? prop is e30/e34 custom and he says clutch was changed along with release bearing and slave cylinder
i also have a victim....black 320 e30 with 12months mot, local, cheap and now mine
...either get that M30 conversion(with m3 g'box and diff) or just going to buy the M50 'n swap all the bits over, sell the touring as a 320 (good engine).....havent made my mind up yet
whats the weight difference between a m50 and m20b20? i know the m30 weighs about the same as titanic lol

Not a lot of difference between M20 and M50, 20 kg max. I saw Julians tourer on Sunday, he has the standard E34 cast manifolds modified to fit so some tubular would be much nicer, lighter aswell
I used a Clio servo and master, dead easy, no spacers needed, connects straight up to rod behind glovebox no messing. Brakes on mine are as good as standard now my ABS is sorted.

he did say that the early lambas wont fit the later 12mm holes in tubular fannymoulds
thanks for the offer eitherway, bought that 335i conversion as its up the road and everything there...HOPFULLY will save some assaches
