OK I'm buying a sport that has a slopy gearchange and was wondering what it could be and how big a job it is.
Also the headlight wipers have stoped working.

Hi - first check is the linkage from bottom of gear lever to the rod underneath the goes to the 'box. This has a nylon(?) bush which can wear. similar setup at gearbox end of linkage. Also the gear lever sits in a nylon cup in the tunnel - worn-out cup will accentuate slop. If these three parts are ok, I guess you're in to gearbox repairs (Ouch).
Any play in linkage bushes/bearings can drastically increase g/lever travel, so hopefully new bushes may solve the problem. does it jump out of gear? - that would say gearbox problems to me, but I'm no expert.
If its just worn bushes, why not think about fitting a 'short-shifter', to reduce lever throw. Zone guys have fitted Z3 levers with great success - I fitted an aftermarket leveroff Ebay for Ԛ£25 which works great. New lever comes with new bushes etc.

Not sure how easy the standard bushes are to change, but they're only some kind of delrin by the look of it so they wear out and make the whole thing sloppy.
I made some replacements up out of bronze and now I have a super snicky shift

I agree with regard to the gear change, go for the Z3 quick shift. I've got one on my 325i and you'd never know to look at it.
As for the headlight wipers, I fixed mine last weekend wasn't too difficult. They sieze up, but it dosen't burn the motor out as they have a thermo resistor thingy. Send me an email and I'll give you a PDF with all you need to know widget@blueyonder.co.uk. If they are fitted they should work!
Good luck getting it all working.

Think I made them fractionally over 13mm OD for an interferance fit in the bit that goes on the gearbox and they're 10mm ID.
Didn't make one for the BMW gearlever as mine's from a Volvo 260 now
