Do it mate, trade your m535i in and barely need change to make up the difference!!!
TBH this car would get me out of e30's in the blink of an eye

Get yourself a 3.8 M5 6 speed with big brakes. You will NEVER regret it even if the maintenance costs are a little high.
The performance and sheer grip is simply stunning. It has to be one of the best overall best car BMW has ever made.
Finding a really nice one is not that easy though.

He could do what you did though sal. And settle for a lhd cheapie.
The market for the e34 m5 is fairly small now. Reason being is that the e34 is very old now, and most of the lesser models are worth about £26.50. Also most of then have been in the wrong hands for years, skimped on history etc. And the e39 is now getting to sub 10k(and is much more of a weapon).
They are great cars for the money. But to be looked after properly you need a big wallet. Hence why most are now rubbish.

That is a bit of a sweeping statement Mr Pilot. I'm sure there are plenty of things that could go dramatically wrong with such a car and cause him to want to self harm.....

That's no bad thing. Clearly some issues with the car. Stay well awayed325i wrote:Its back up for salebut the car is now in scotland

Oh noooooo E34 M5 with notoriously week 6 speed gearbox and no doubt Nurburgring self levelling (well sometimes) suspension with 199k on the clock

You are heading for a fall. If you must have an M5 and have deep pockets with the correct length arms to suite, get an E28 M5 like mine, pictured above but get one with over 100K that has had the timing chain replaced by some other poor sod that has parted with best part of £3000 to have that little job done! On the plus side E28 M5's are otherwise bullet proof, they are no more hi tech than your E30's and as standard produce 286 BHP, that gives you 0-60 6.2 and 155MPH unlimitted and flat out.
A good idea for the road is a set of Toyo T1R's, it stays on the road then as well. You'll have a real wolf in sheeps clothing and one of only 187 RHD cars for the UK.
DO NOT BUY ONE THAT SEEMS ARE BARGAIN, BUY THE BEST YOU CAN AFFORD.
A good alternative would be either a B9 (247 BHP) or a B10 (261 BHP) from the E28 Alpina stable, these though are rearer still.

Alas E28 M5s while nice cars and great fun were made in limited numbers so are very thin on the ground. Most are unfortuneately clothed in a nasty council bodykit (see above
) , rotten, or owned by enthusiast types who think their square rigger is a desireable classic (it is) and worth bundles (it isn't ).
E34s on the other hand are cheap as chips and it is usually easier and cheaper to replace a shock than an inner flitch !

3.6's are are five speed and so are most 3.8's, only the late wide grille cars having the 6 speed and the nasty 18 inch wheels. E28's are (were?) a nice car but the only problem is that they are an E28. That means rust, damp boots, shonky central locking etc etc etc. The 3.6 isn't that fast but the 3.8 does go well. No body rot issues and the engine doesn't need a 3 grand chain job. Plus they're a nicer car anyway. As a car, the B9/B10 is possibly a nicer car to drive than the M5. It is 30-40 bhp down but they've got so much grunt from 800rpm and they'll also wind up to 145-150 if you're brave enough.
199k on a well maintained 3.6 isn't really an issue as long as it's been well cared for and you don't cane the tits off it. At the end of the day it's not rocket science.

As for most of them having the "council" body kit, you couldn't be more wrong, most looked as standard as a 518i, the body kit was an undesireable no cost option that most didn't go for, i happen to like mine.
The difference is that the E34 M5 was made in vast numbers, is heavy and basically worth the square route of f*ck all for those reasons.

No doubt your ride is a 1984 Skoda fast back.

Jam, custody of a whirlpool M5 with a few council bits hardly makes you a marque authority
I on the other hand have owned 4 e28 M5s as well as two M635s (the same but ,nice to look at !) One of the M5s , a one owner car in gloss black (complete with the nasty kit !
) i restored and supplied to a victim in australia, he won many awards , such was the quality of the car . So maybe i do know what i am talking about
An e28 M5 is a rare specialist car , all the others i have had which were decent cars after lots of money and time proved very difficult to sell, comments like "i really wanted one with the bodykit" " i really wanted one without the bodykit" " i don't like leather" etc etc drove me bananas, these cars attract sad penniless anoraks, sad but true.
Don't get me wrong, i love e28 M5s,i much prefer driving them to an E34, they feel much more taut and have a great driving position BUT they are a very old car that will inevitably need a lot of work or will have had loads done to a questionable standard.
With some prudence, it is quite easy to find a decent 3.6 M5 for £2500, the same amount will seldom buy anything other than a corpse on a stretcher of an e28 M5. My cheapest was a zinnobar red late E reg car ,no kit, black leather, taxed and tested, recent chain etc for £1300 !
Alas it was a rare factory 'chrome' car and some council type had tinted the windows and fitted shocking 17" wog wheels !
One thing you were right about was that my ride was a skoda, yes indeed i own a'99 fellatio diesel shooting brake complete with a packet of werthers in the glove box.........
I also own a M635, An e34 M5 touring, an Alpina B6 3.5 , an E34 Alpina B10, a'91 e30 M3 , an evo2 e30 M3, a maserati Ghibli,a xjs v12 cab , a GMC typhoon, a v10 dodge ram and lots of other landfill !

I think you have just been well and truly shot down in flames Old Boy. The black car (supplied new by Godfrey Hall in Coventry and serviced exclusively by them from new) was a minter. I'd just bought a concours Sport Evo from Pete and wanted to chop it back in for the M5 but getting money out of Pete is like trying to finger the Queen.jam172 wrote:Pacepete, interesting observations about the E28 M5, here speaks a man who plainly knows little or nothing about them,
But he did sell me a Henna red B9 3.5 Alpina, the very first RHD car built.

Considering LHD 3.8 late (big brake, 6 speed) M5's now go for as little as £2500 it's not a bad option given that the RHD ones are over £7500.
I am struggling to get £3000 for mine even in excellent condition and new EDC dampers, springs, bushes, mounts, etc etc..

E28 M5 - Beautiful looking hand made cars. Would give my right arm for.
Looked at an E39 M5, spent months researching (I think I've more literature on that car than BMW has) checked the running costs, general maintenance, not cheap at all. But then it's an 'M' car.
Anybody thinking they can run them on budget are simply fooling themselves.
They require lots of tlc and £Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£ at the ready just in case.
I've heard all sorts of horror stories, skimping on parts leads to unreliable cars.
It's not surprising there are so many unwanted versions out there.
Spend 3k on a E34, timing chain goes bye bye and its adios amigos

But the chain's don't 'go' on these. The 24v M5 engine is one that is really very simple - no vanos for example. If you can rebuild an M50, you can rebuild one of these. They really are (pricey) nuts and bolts unlike the E39 M5 which, although a superb car, will be a financial ballache to run. I don't see many of those getting to 200'000 like the E34 can.hubble1990 wrote:Spend 3k on a E34, timing chain goes bye bye and its adios amigos![]()
I'd give the 3.6 a swerve personally although there are those that think they're great. A late 3.8 6 speed in mint condition is about the same money (£8000) and an early, leggy E39 and I know which I'd rather have.
For me, a gloss black or Avus blue 5 speed E34 on throwing stars is a far more appealing vehicle than the E28. Buy a good one and servicing apart they won't be that dear to run.
Talking of leggy E39's check this one out. Not too sure about it. Not that I'm interested, just one I saw whilst checking the trader out.
