this is happening quite often now at the same place, geographicaly.
on the way home from work theres a steepish uphill where theres always congestion, after a while stuck in traffic the car starts vibrating when stationary, but its worse when inching forward, as if its running on 3 cylinders, it revs fine and theres no loss of power or overheating.
has anyone any clues as to what it could be?
the car returns to normal when i get back into free-flowing traffic

sounds like hot clutch shudder, which all bm's do in traffic. Well my other 2 e30's did, but the 325 seems fine.
