I've read in other posts figures of £6-7k, are people basing this on JUST engine related costs alone or including brakes/ suspension etc as well into this price range?

Probably engine costs.
You got engine gearbox ecu etc for 2k then things like radiator mounts diff etc it all adds up

To be honest £2k would be the starting price for a good engine. Don't forget that the engine part of the 'engine ' conversion is the easy bit. You'll need the whole package. Loom, ECU, EWS, manifolds, E36 fuel pump, M50 oil pump, E34 M50 sump, dipstick tube, the list goes on.
I paid a lot more for my kit from FAB but it is a low mileage S50B32 from a '99 late model Evo cab, clean and guaranteed with BMW history from new. That kind of peace of mind isn't cheap.
If you did the whole lot, engine, brakes, suspension etc then I reckon £7k should see it all done. Saying that it could be done cheaper.

6/7k is kinda the cost of just the engine really, you want to be doin it properly.. as is said, 2k is a starting point for a decent engine
