hi all,
sorry i can't be more specific than this, know sod all about cars.
the knocking comes from the front of the car, and only either when the cars warm, or when i've done a few miles.
it seems a bit random (i.e. not when i do any one particular thing, like turn the steering wheel/go over a bump) but just sporadically, and i can feel it (as well as hear it) through the foot well and steering column.
i was told i have a bush gone on the passenger side control arm, don't know if this is anything to do with it, as the noise/knocking seems to come more fom the drivers side.
any info here'd be great, ta.
Knocking sound...

either lower control arm bushes or anti-roll bar bushes could be the culprit I suppose.
Can you look under the car whilst someone bounces it a little?

Holy Thread Revival!
Mines got the same issues 1993 318 M40 Auto Touring, changed the ARB links,Steering guibo/UJ, knackered Engine Mounts - no joy, starts knocking from the front, when the cars warm (driving for 45 mins.), when taking up drive, coming to a stop, or go over speed humps, anyone got any ideas?

Front exhaust clamp?
Most 'knocks' result in metal getting polished somewhere, so look for something bright and shiny that shouldn't be.

When my top shock absorber mount went I had a random knocking like you describe, sporadic and not when you might expect it. Might be worth a peek?

Thanks for that guys, I'll have a look at the exhaust.
Any idea how to test the Shock Mounts?

Reach between the coils of the spring and try to move the damper rod sideways may show some movement that shouldn't be there, but ultimately you'll have to unscrew the three nuts on the suspension turret under the bonnet, push the mount down clear of the bolt holes, and spin/twist it.

This is sorted now, it was the Track Rod, The Gaiter was split, I'm assuming, where the car was getting hot, it was drying out allowing the creaking/knocking/squeaking sound. New Track Rod & Gaiter, all fine.
