jack the car up from the back and rotate one of the rear wheels, if the other spins the same way you have and LSD, if opposite way then open diff

Or just make it wheel spin and have a look how many black lines there are

1 = open diff

2 = LSD

Been told if the 2 plugs (fill and drain) are directly above one another its an LSD, if they're opposite sides of the back end of the diff (sort of 1 at 1 o'clock, other at 7 o'clock) its a open diff

Think thats right anyways

:D and then if you spin round an do a big ass donut without trying, it's an LSD

Park with one wheel on a grass verge.. Accelerate off & if only the wheel on the grass spins like mad and you don't get anywere it's an open diff.. Or a broken LSD winkeye

Not true, both LSD and open diffs use the same ally backplates.

The only true way to tell is to jack one rear wheel up, take the handbrake off and leave it in neutral, try to turn the wheel that's off the ground. If it turns easily it's an open diff, if it's very difficult to turn it's an LSD.

It's possible to get an open diff to spin both wheels and leave 2 black lines on the road.

Cheers,

they did, but many probably have knackered clutch packs, or have been changed for better condition (i.e. quieter) open diffs for cheap when unscrupulous people have sorted a cheap car out to sell it on

Same question from me really, every morning i arrive at work via a dirt road with a sharp corner, needless to say i arrive at work every day SIDEWAYS winkeye I have noticed that it leaves a double wheelspin even on the actual corner, is this a sign of LSD? Forgot to say its a 325i cab.

*ABS was fitted as an option to later models only, may have been standard on late US models. Some models had a limited slip diff, LSD part numbers have an S or Z if you want to check yours.
