in comparison, the e30 318iS to the e36 318iS.....a good e30 iS costs about the same....im after a e30 iS but keep seeing the e36 wrongness about, with full mtec kits and cant help but wonder....only want the 4pot as its cheaper to run as cercumstances have changed, is there any debate or out-and-out stick to the e30
i know its wrong but hmmm

They're both worth the money and both look cool.
Me bro had a late reg E36 iS and it wasn't as fun to drive, mainly because it wasn't as 'raw'.
I'd still go with the E30 just because it's cooler.
If you don't care about that then go E36 as it's just easier to live with day to day I guess.
FUCKING HELL blatantarrogance it's like a daily battle with you - you're on EVERY THREAD!
Mind you, that means I am too tho...

Drive an E36 318is. Then drive a 320i - a touch more power (not a lot though) but they sound so much better and because the E36 has its engine mounted so far back (the front pulley is right above the steering rack) any extra weight isn't felt. 1994 onwards cars are alloy block anyway. I've never thought the M42 really suited the E36 for some reason.

well whats the difference in fuel economy between the 320i and the 325i...as the insurance is nearly the same.
i much prefer my 6pot to my 4pot (both for sale as it happens) but just cant afford the fuel on the e34 and the 4pot is a 316...meh
never had any m50 engine, i just guess it will rape my limited funds, i thought a 4pot sport would be entertaining and not to costly

nothing wrongness about an e36.. unless its in the wrong hands! its bigger, heavier and more refined with better handling, however its not as 'raw' as an e30 and feels the extra size and weight it is.. (tho it wont be rusty and leaking
)

no where near the same as an e30.. everything will rust if uncared for, its a simple chemical reaction

Not a chance! Good iS you will be MAX £2500. A post 97 E36 iS (the one with the 1.9 rather than 1.8 ) will go for at least double that. I know 'cause I spent nearly a year and a half trying to pick between the 2.the e30 318iS to the e36 318iS.....a good e30 iS costs about the same
You want more refinement, better motorway cruising etc get the e36.
For fun, looks, kudos etc etc get the e30. they are much more chuckable, lighter and IMO the better choice. You can get soo much car for your money with the e30 iS too, look what the basic package (sports seats, body kit, tech-1 goodies) and you can then find ones with more (like leather interior) then all the better.

Yep, true, but your negating the fact that most e30's are nearly twice as old as e36's!!!Jhonno wrote:no where near the same as an e30.. everything will rust if uncared for, its a simple chemical reaction

I bought an E36 318is (M44 1.9) last October. It's a late '97 model in Calypso Red with half leather interior and the mtec kit less rear spoiler (which i prefer). Had 47k on it when I got it, spent a few quid making it mint and now it's in fine nick with thousands of miles left in it.
It's mainly for the missus but I get to take it out on the weekends and theres no denying that I enjoy driving it. It feels very neutral though and the steering is a touch vague around dead centre (but I don't care 'cos I'm not Lewis Hamilton) it grips like sh!t to a blanket with the Toyo CF1's I put on it. It's all totally standard and I really like it. The engine enjoys revving without a shawdow of a doubt.
However, the brakes are crap, no question about it, if you give it some stick, they fade quickly which is annoying but I just live with that because its a road car for getting the missus to work at the end of the day and she drives it normally (whatever that is!)
Never driven an E30 IS but I would assume it is more "fun" judging by magazine write-ups and comments form fellow zoners.
I still have my E30. Nuff said!

And I thought I was a BMW geek! I'm actually annoyed I didn't know that!

what about a 323i?
just checked insurance...cheaper than e36 320, and e30 325sport.....20bhp down on the m50b25...how do i get that back lol and whats fuel economy like?i see they are all later e36's soo better build quality i guess but what about all this subframe stuff and rust....and would that be a m50 or m52?
just want somthing good comfy but entertaining on all the b roads out my village, not overcostly and am put off by electrical probs of my current e30...
in time i want a nice 6potted e30, and am really keen on a 318iS for now...but the wrongness is tempting

The 323i is the alloy block M52 up to 1998.
Basically:
M50 - iron block 24v non vanos, ran up to late 1992 (H/J/first K plate) 320i and 325i.
M50TU - iron block 24v single vanos 1992-1995 (K/L/M plate) 320i and 325i.
M52 - alloy block 24v single vanos 320i, 323i (325i with 320i inlet manifold to strangle power from 192 to 170 bhp) and 328i.
M52TU - alloy block 24v double vanos. Not used in the E36.
You can fit the 325i/525i M50 or M50TU inlet manifold to a 323i or 328i, both of which used the 2 litre manifold. You will need an adaptor plate to either re-use the 323i/328i throttle body (the 325i one won't work) or a big bore throttle body. If you try to bolt the M52 throttle body to an M50 manifold you'll just have air leaks and it'll be shite.
The 318iS saloon was a South African built car imported by a BMW dealer who got into trouble. They were never an official catalogued model and there are 2-300 of them over here. Watch out for rust as the S.A cars were not rustproofed that well. A nicxe one though is worth having over the Coupe and were available with or without the M3 bodykit.

What about a 318ti? has the M44 engine and e30 rear end making for a 'fun' drive... if you can cope with the 'unusual' looks!
