Replacing a door lock....am I being shafted?

My garage is telling me that to replace door locks means removing the window, regulator, etc etc from the door and as such, rather than my car being in the garage for just today, it's going to be there till monday night.

They are saying that BMW's time estimation on the job is about a quarter of what it should be. Am I being fed bullpoop or should I believe them?

To replace the key barrel you don't have to remove anything other than the trim panel to gain access... or are you talking of the actual latch assembly? if so i've never had one out so can't help you there.

K&R???? Its an insurance job so would rather let someone else do it.

As far as I'm aware they are simply replacing the lock barrells although maybe part of the assembly was broken when things were forced?

It's being fixed by a Peugeot garage so they probably don't have a clue......although the insurance company's engineer seems to agree with them.

Whats wrong with the locks? is it the locks themselves or the central locking units?

I had similar problem recently - ive never done a lock before so I was a bit worried Id mess it up..

I paid Ԛ£33 for a complete new door lock from a dealer, swapped the pins (or whatever theyre called) over so that i could use my old keys - though you dont need to do this. Took the door panel off and peeled back the protective film underneath - just on the RHS of the door.

Then you can get your hand inside the door and get access to the clip that holds the barrel in place. Slid it off (slides to LHS I think) and out came the barrel.

I dont think Ive missed anything out. And as the Haynes comic book says "replacement is opposite of removal" except its prob worth remembering which way up the original barrel came out...

took me ages initially but now ive done one I reckon I could do the other in about 40 minutes. My local independant BMW specialist quoted Ԛ£90+VAT.

BTW - what car is this for? Mine was a 1989 2dr 320 with electric windows.

Apparently the two door has much better access to the internals of the door than the four door does. There is one access hole at the bottom of the door that is apparently tiny and they can't even get their hands up to the lock barrel. They are having to remove almost everything to get to it.

that bollux you dont have to take anything out

ok its easyer if they do but even then it will only take about 30 mins to change the locks a side and that removing everything

Just had my barrel replaced by Wood BMW - if I recall, 1.5 hrs labour, and that was on a cab where the door has extra braces inside I think?
