M40 vacum filter?

what is the filter low down beneath the airflow meter mounted to the lower engine bay.Its fat and stumpy and has a vacum pipe to maniflow attached?

Right, now for my 1000th post and third roundel.
Asuming yours is a late car, then this is a carbon canister in the fuel tank vent line, deeding petrol fumes into the engine rather than venting to the atmosphere.

It is a J plate 318i I have purchased. It needs a bit of work to get back normal wheesing m40 standard...curently it is hunting beetween 750-1500 on idle.
This car has a smaller red bull size canister and the vacum pipe has been sealed ,there is a disconected electrical connection that normally goes to the standard carbon canister.The exhaust has been replaced without CAT.
I think some cowboy has taken off the CAT (if it orginally had one). Im not sure?!? would it run like a bag of IT if this where the case?..cheers......Mak
