early high comp engines

is there any way to tell apart the low/high comp engines? mines a 88 e reg chromp bumper cab so i think that right on the change over, is ther any numbers or ne thing?

Um... easiest way's probably to look at the ECU - if the number ends in 073 it's on early (1.1?) Motronic, 173 is late (1.3?). They swapped at the same time as the high / low comp lumps... I expect you can tell from engine numbers too, but I don't know how exactly!
E30 in need of wiring loom smoke since April '11...

checking the ecu numbers isnt conclusive.

Ive had open at least 2 motronic managed m20's that have the early high compression pistons in them and ive spoken to others that have found the same thing.

I would think the way to tell without removing the head would be to measure the compression perhaps???

engine code which is near to the engine number on the side of the block

25 6k 1 = low comp
25 6e 1 = high comp

have a look at the plug that the reset tool goes into, its by the inlet manifold towards the front end of the car, the pre face lift one is small and D shaped face lift one is larged and round :) that way you can tell at a glance. hope this helps.
