Forget the M40, too troublesome and I don't trust that cam belt. The M42 is a nice little unit, but fairly well already tapped out. The M10 is the go. Its a legend of an engine with loads of potential and you can rev the thing all day every day and it wont let you down. You can bore it out to 92mm and stroke it with an S14 crank to give you 2.3litres. Even at 2 litres with good head porting, the right pistons, induction and ignition upgrades - 200hp is totally possible. I have one. And if you want to get serious, then turbo it. A local guy is running an M10 turbo at 32psi and has 500hp at the wheels, no joke. The thing is an animal! WRX's and Porshes don't know what hit them when he blasts past them. So anything from 150hp for a mild performance engine to crazy 500hp Turbo set-ups, I reckon the M10 is the champ! The S14 is a legend, but costly to improve. But don't forget is basically uses the M10 block.

m10man. you make me wanna

I had chance to get an m10 316 in a really nice deep blue. was a pre facelift arches were a bit shit but no too bad. I passed because the standard carb setup was buggered and it drove like a bag of shit.

the m40b18 on the other hand was lovely from the outset. wish I'd known about the m10 potential beforhand. was a REALLY nice blue too.

With the bbtb, decat and panel filter I'd imagine I'm running 150bhp, give or take 5 ish?

My engine has 170k on it though else I'd be considering tuning it further.
:giggle: At the fly mate? When it ran 128 RWHP last year, bbtb wont have added that much?

Anyway, you are all losers - 3S-GTE running 235bhp, soon to be 270.

john, that video is amazing, the 2 minute point is the best by far though, where he overtakes on the outside with his arm out of the window giving abuse to the driver on the inside....pure class

sounds gorgeous too.

Jeez... that must mean with my BBTB, Viper chip, K&N induction and freeflow exhaust I'm pushing out 170bhp at least! Woo hoo!

Might be a little optomistic there...

at the fly yeah... 128 at the wheels, call it 13% transmission loss = 145bhp at the fly. 5bhp for the throttle body then give or take 5 for inaccuracies in guestimating...

It's putting 60 sprints in in 8.1s now so I think it's fair, beats trying to claim 160bhp from just a chip anyway!

Toyota do make some tunable turbo motors

back to the calculator ->

hmm... so the bbtb has got to add 2-4 to the rwhp... could be an over estimate I guess, 2 sounds reasonable. It's certainly quicker anyway but that might be more through the rev range rather than top end.

Will be interesting to see

Simon13 wrote:2 grand insurance on an iS is stupid, wait till u have 1 NCB's Sam!

Yeh i could mate. But im currently under my dads name so im not getting any NCB, so if i was to start my own policy its like nearly 2 grand anyway,so if i was too then get an IS its not much cheaper tbh.

And i know what you mean about the M40. Its pretty cack. Ive got my brothers IS motor sitting here, but not sure about fitting it in/insurance. But i neeeeed more power lol!

I found a company that will insure me on a sport on my 18th.......that would be a laugh.Although id be paying the same in insurance as i would have for a nice sport.Sucks

I bit the bullet and got insurance on my own name from the start, its "just" about paying off now and im 22

Maybe you could slap the iS engine in and not tell anyone :duck:
Worse comes to it say you bought it like that, its a 1.8 after all!

Yeh will, but insurance assesers are pretty tough now a days i think. They might notice the extra 8 valves :?

Thats my only trouble. I mean, i know maybe a couple of people that i could probably swindle into helping swap lumps over, but then if i cant get insured on it....lol :P All i know mate is that i need more power. My brothers just buying a 2.7 and i have no chance now lol.

Hopefully we will buy the car back for deffinate once all the insurance has been sorted out,but i think we will.In which case i might look into swaping the lumps over

Many insurance comps dont know the difference between an iS and a normal i
Thats the beauty of a 2.7 tho its impossible to tell unless the insurance fuker opens it up and starts measuring the block etc 8)

When I had my accident in my first Sport, the insurance assessor came round and said... "Right then, what is it?"

To which I replied... "It's a 325i Sport"

To which he then said... "What size engine is that then?"

Erm, okay then... and after I spent so long putting it back to standad incase then would void my insurance... :x

Better safe than sorry though.

lol, sounds like a similar case to my brothers is that has just been written off. We spent a while taking the chip out, wheels off etc. But im not too sure how clued up certain companies would be on engines. You hear some companies checking for chips etc,so i would of thought theyd of known what engine it is, 1.8 m40, 1.8 16v twin cam. Although its not so obvious when you give it a quick look over.

If only we didnt have insurance, id have a 3.5 in by now

lol. nice. but I guess you need to insure it as 2.5i first. still expensive :)

I toyed with the idea of clip on pipework and supercharger. So it could be removed in a jiffy. lol

Not that I'm advocating this kind of thing! It was just a thought that crossed my mind. Made me chuckle for a while. A clip-on supercharger.

to be honest-it appears that most ins companies fail to know the difference between the 318i and 318iS

most of the dudes seem to charge a little extra , and a lot of the 'specialist companies' will actually charge less...

I'd give it a pop coss you have a donor car that you know well!

give the companies a ring round first (also make sure both your parents are on the policy)-saves several pennies

Think it depends on the claim you're making.

If you bump into someone in traffic, they're not likely to give a shit. If you fall off the motorway, onto a train line and derail a train, they'll most likely take the entire car apart looking for a way out of paying!

What's left of it anyway

keep looking and youl find it cheaper dude
if you get a sport..find a standard one!yes mod it if you will, but if its modded and they're not on the zone, more than likly ragged and they dont know about the car i.e. crap if any servicing

when i was 19 i have a cav gsi (redtop) 2wd with stage one listed, 1700 a year....2k for a iS is crazy

sorry to add more questions, briefly, whats needed to dump-a-lump , m10 into the iS

hartge does a 2.1 conversion

cant remember who it is on here, (timbob? ) but has a worked m10 with a few surprises ;)

theres a few that have done it.

the motorsport f1 had 1100 hp from a worked m10, but needed a complete rebuild after each race (as they all do really) but it proves with the right skills and tools it is possible

and this thread is grandad

i think the max they reached was about 1400BHP, but that was in qulifying trim, in race trim the made slightly less to ensure they would last the entire race
