Welcome to the zone.
I bought a 316, got bored, dropped in a 325.
I am a complete mechanical retard and I managed it, so anyone can.
You just unplug the engine loom in the engine bay (big round connector by the fuse box) and plug the new one back in. Swap ecu's, feed the ecu plug through the bulkhead (drivers side, by the battery) and plug in.
Its that simple.
Ps. keep the 316 diff, close ratio acceleration is fun! (it wont last long before it shreds itself so have a 325 one handy, but it will be fun while it lasts)
pps, what age 316? auto or manual? Saloon, touring? condition?

Like munky says, the engine is not too tricky as the looms just swap over. But all that is the easy part - main hassle with upgrading a four pot will be ugrading all the running gear as well - Suspension, prop, diff and brakes.
