I'd go for 8000K as it's got just the right amount of blue tinge to it!
I hate the yellow-ness of halogen, and don't really like really blue either...
8000K would be just right with a slight blue tinge!
(remember the new cars have a tinted projector lense which makes their light seem really blue/purple, and that same bulb in a e30 would look alot whiter - I was told that by people who supply Xenons!)

The law is being brought in as we speak. Because badly mounted hid's blind people and have been the cause of accidents.
Its on the bbc website somewhere, but I'll be f*cked if I can be bothered to look.

people got pissed off with cars when they moved to halogen technology back in the 60's, people would get flashed because they are brighter and people assume they are on full beam.
accept HIDs into your life and you will be amazed, makes the difference from a dull yellow road to being like daylight in front of you, much safer driving experience.

for you, but not other drivers.
I do agree they are much better than normal lights, but when mounted in normal headlights or mounted badly they are very dangerous for other users.
Properly mounted ones are very good, legal and safe.

HID's in old style headlightd as per chrome chariots, which have the cuts and angles on the glass to refract the light cause an issue as they throw the light everywhere and this is what the gov are trying to get rid of.
The e30 uses projector style lenses or rather late models do and do not throw the light so yes you are correct but it is ok for them to be fitted to last e30's and e34's etc.
I have had mine MOT'd twice and never had anything said!!!
Plus my mates 95 911 (964 I think) passed with flying colours too

As Bob said, when mounted in the cars with projector type lamps, they reduce glare considerably.

Time to reveal that I've been experimenting with a set lately. I've modified a couple of standard smileys to take D2S HID lamps, and have one set up beside a standard smiley to compare the beam patterns.
First time I turned the HID on I was less than impressed - didn't look at all bright.
Then I turned the standard light on. I honestly thought I'd connected up the parking light bulb by mistake!! Absolutely no comparison.
Realised then that my workshop is brighter than I thought (28 X 5' fluorescent tubes!), which accounted for the poor first impression.
As for beam patterns: With the bulb position tweaked a little, the light distribution between the two looked very similar, and the cut off was just as good. Can't see they'll cause ant problems.

Problem with the E30 early/late projectors is that they are 80's technology and are in a word crap.
You can try all you want they just cant produce the sread of a modern projector.

Go HID and forget all the crap from the non-HID losers. Can't recommend them enough. Even if you end up having to swap them back for an MOT it's just a bulb swap.
If you're a responsible citizen you'll get 4300k and set them up properly so you don't blind people. 4300 is a pure brilliant white and makes the standard lights look like oil lamps. Nice and mellow and warm coloured but f**k all use on a road at night. Blue lights are for coppers, corsas and C***S

badly mounted brakes kill people but they're not illegal. What a crap law. We have lighting checks in the MOT already - the only standard required is that the dip beam cutoff/alignment is correct and the lights are safe and working. Who gives a flyer what technology is behind them?munky30 wrote:The law is being brought in as we speak. Because badly mounted hid's blind people and have been the cause of accidents.

Thats my point, and the point of the new law. Too many little c**ts in corsas etc are just slapping an hid kit into lenses that arent designed for it, and blinding other road users.Morat wrote: If you're a responsible citizen you'll get 4300k and set them up properly so you don't blind people. 4300 is a pure brilliant white and makes the standard lights look like oil lamps. The law allows hid's as long as the lights they are put into still give a proper light spray pattern.
There's no doubt they are far superior to halogens etc for visibility, but they ARE dangerous when mounted wrong and so imho the law they are bringing in is fair and right. All it is trying to do is make sure that when they are used they are used properly.

I've no problem with dangerous kit being banned, but I'd be seriously annoyed if the heavy hand comes down on us being able to put HIDs in smileys because they really don't dazzle oncoming drivers. I've had mine fitted nearly a month and not had a single person flash me. You can see the cutoff just as before. Well, better than before actually because the light is good enough to actually make a contrast!

as far as I know, the law they want to bring in (but haven't yet) is just for badly fitted ones.
If they work in e30 lights properly then I am tempted to get them myself, mainly so when I'm blinded by some f*cker in a car with badly fitted ones I can see better
I should have written in my first post 'badly fitted HID's p*ss me off'...

When i had my e30, i put a conversion kit in, it was 6500K improvement on the standard, if you were going to the expense of doing it i would say you need to upgrade the projectors as demlot says they are rubbish., its a fiddly job which demlot has done a few times, it worth it, plus i really would not go over 6000K, my 330d is oem and you can really see the beam spread.
I have motd my car with the kit, no questions asked!

Do it mate, they're so utterly worth it if you drive at night. Not such a priority now with the summer evenings maybe - but you'll love em anyway.munky30 wrote:as far as I know, the law they want to bring in (but haven't yet) is just for badly fitted ones.
