This is something i've never really understood, In the likes of the E36 Compact and loads of E46 saloons, Why do the badges claim 316 for eg, and are actually 1.9's?

Someone shed some light please... :?

I know on the Turbo'd BMW's, BMW badge up to what they think the equivelent powered N/A engine equivelent would be. If that makes sence, not sure why they do it on N/A cars though

Q: how long is a piece of string?

A: does it really matter?

My 325 should be a 324.94. Oh the injustice!

how sh!t would it be to look at 319i badge???

everything is all kept in order of familiar 'sensible' numbers, to avoid confusion and to avoid people thinking it sounds weird.

the E46 320i is actually a 2.2 litre, but a 322i would sound well gay

the '5' added to the end of the 3.0litre petrol and deisel twin turbo cars is just to diffrentiate it between single or no turbo and the twin...

why would 319 look any more or less sh*t than 316?

Same with 322.

They dont change it because its what the public are used to. Its not rocket science. Fear of change is a powerful force in the buying public.

amd rating is to show what the equivalent intel processor is needed to achieve the same performance

right, i just spoke to one of the BMW boffins at the BMW Academy (im there/here on a training course)

he informs that there are upto 500 diferent engine and gearbox variations. The reason that not all engine sizes match the badge on the rear is[/] to simplify things for the market, as i suggested it was. Take the badges off, and every BMW is different. Badged up, there a model in a series.

The market, esp the one BMW appeals to, are not acceptant to change and confusion.

The '5' in the 335i petrol, is to signify its a turbo, not because its a similar output to a N/A 3.5 litre engine, as is the '5' in 535d or 335d, to signify its twin-turbo

the 1 series only has 3 different 4 cyl engines in its range. 1 size diesel, just mapped differently, and 2 size petrol a 1.6 and a 2.0, again mapped differently

the E36 323i was never a 2.3 litre. it was to carry on with heritage, as the E21 323i was such an impact for them

so, thats the real answer

So why is my modified E28 525e (now 527i) badged as a 516i ??

Actually, its because i want it to "look" awfully slow. winkeye

(You know the score ... a guy pulls up beside me in his 1 year old
1.4 litre vauxhall vectra and thinks "hey finally theres a car i can actually
race off the lights and beat".
..... Like a lamb to the slaughter, hook line and sinker. ).
