Hi everyone, i have an alpina c2 2.7 (genuine)

The damn engine doesnt have an engine number!! where it should be is just blank, not ground off or dirty, its just clean metal.

The safety tag attached to the sump is still there, (these are put there to prevent grinding the number off)

The engine has alpina ECU, headers, original black rocker cover etc. If the engine had been taken out, the headers and top would have been as well....

Nothing goes with the blank number!

Why doesnt it have an engine number, and howww can i tell if it is indeed the 2.7? What can i check???

IIRC, at some time the engine number was near where the distributor blank plate is on the LH side of the block.

Like the block I have in the shed, it looks like its been ground off and then cleaned up with the sander so its smooth.

You could always take a spark plug out and stick something like a straw down and mark the length which would tell you the stroke therefor engine size.

You need to find the four digit number stamped into the front of the head, inlet side; they'll be slightly obscured by the manifold but you can just about see them.

If they're there, that will at least tell you the head is genuine Alpina.

What should the number read? Do you mean stamped, or cast? (inny or outy)

Stamped; just a random four-digit number.

I think you are talking about the number which i cannot find dude.... just to the rear of the left side engine mount? (just forward of it on slightly later engines)

The number I'm talking about is stamped into the cylinder head, behind the inlet manifold - look for it around the circled area in this pic:

If there is no stamped, four-digit number there it's not an Alpina head.

Well cant find any number- so must be a 325i engine- car has ALL th eother parts incl. ECU and headers, suspension etc etc, and the car is apparently an original sytner C2 2.7.. wonder what happened to the head and block??

Also, if the part number cast into the centre of the head (same side) ends in 885 it's a 325i.
