swop is the same as the M50 swop, you'll need the M50 sump and oil pickup pipe.

Loom could be hassle , its blessed with EWS so make sure its all there.....

Keep the title as it was.

The E36 was right, you need oil pick up pipe and sump from an E34

E36 328i motor, E34 M50 sump and oil pick up :thumb:

As long as the ECU, EWS module and ignition key all come from the same car, you shouldnt have any problems with the EWS - its a few extra wires to connect up.
The loom, EWS antenna etc can come from different cars, but it would obviously be easier to get it all from the same donor, hopefully one you can see running before you rob all the good bits winkeye

Have a look through the M50 swap threads, as Ant said its pretty much the same, just a bit more wiring work.

I guess you could always ditch the ECU for a Megasquirt setup? Not sure about Vanos tho.

All 328i's have EWS so you'll need a wiring loom and ECU from a single Vanos 325i or 525i unless you really want to fuck about with EWS modules and ignition lock transponder rings - you'll need the E36 328i ignition barrel and chipped key. E34 525i/520i sump is needed too.

Plus the E34 loom is much more suitable as the ECU sits on the driver's side, not on the passenger side like the E36. An engine loom and ECU from a K-M plate 525i won't be much more than £30 from a breakers.

Id like to know of a breakers that would sell an ECU from a 24 valve for less than £30 :?

Tight fu**ers round here wouldnt let me have a bare block for under £50. He asked me how much I would like to pay for it, I said how about £20? He laughed and tried to make out it was worth more scrap value

You're going to the wrong scrapyards. winkeye

Where I go - diffs are £30, complete 325i head with manifolds £50, any panel £20, steering wheels £10 etc etc.

Smiths of Bloxham near Banbury. They have no idea of what they have in stock and they are not interested in looking for bits for you. You arrive, rummage around the 4-500 cars in there, take what you want and pay for it. On my last trip I bought two almost new (still with moulding spikes on) 205/60x15 Toyo Proxes for my E36 for £20 and an M Tech 2 wheel for a tenner. Before that I bought two E30 LSD's and an 885 325i head, £100 the lot.

I've been to Smithys a few times. He's cheap but he's a grumpy fat old c***. :D

No real need to get an E34 loom. My E36 328i loom, once picked out of the bulkhead box and stretched into a 4 pot E30 loom box easily* stretches to fit in the standard E30 ECU location.

* Even easier if you just drink tea while Ian Haynes stretches it in there. :D

Go for the later M52 loom and set up, I am running an M50 loom/ecu on my M52 and it has its problems due to the fueling/vanos maps etc being totally different, also iirc the later setup can be programmed through the OBD socket

Have to agree with you. Why people run M52s on M50 looms is beyond me.

And me :D

I think a lot of it stems from people reading too many US OBD1/OBD2 threads on US forums. I believe it is a bit more of an issue over there, but not in the UK. EWS is about the only reason over here, and that's simple enough as long as you get the matching electronic parts.

Ian.

:D When I started my M52 conversion I bought two cd's from zionsville autos in USA. What a complete waste of over £100

I have used very little of the info provided in them and if they were worth £100 then the info from Ian is worth about £10,000!!! It was them that said that was the only way to get the later engines running in early cars.

I may well need some info when I convert back to the original loom (EWS) shortly :D

Good good cos I have £10,000 imaginary beer vouchers with your name on sunshine.... Especially when I start hassling you for the wiring diagrams and instructions I'll need to wire this S50 up very soon :D

The M52 into E30 is an awesome swap. The reason I went for the S50 is because A: It has four hundred pub horse power more than the M52, and B: it turned up on ebay at exactly the wrong (sorry, right) time!

Any of my friends have E30 engine trouble now, the first thing I say is: 'slap a 24v in there'.
