Yeah, it's definately not pos3, but there's not alot in it and your's looks more friendly to work on certain parts than mine. I can't see it being an issue though.

No tunnel bashing was needed at all.

I can't wait to see it up and running! winkeye

all told, especially with the weather, my monster hangover and getting there late, it went quite well i reckon! whenever i tried to go under the car or duck down, everything started spinning  (well that's my excuse to get out of climbing underneath anyway!!!)

finding the immobiliser was a lucky call though! that took about 5 mins to trace through and once bypassed it fired straight up! the neighbours slamming their windows once it started was quite funny! :D

the 3 fuel line setup on the 'is' is wierd though

:chuckle:

Yeah, snow and angry neighbours didn't really help!
The window slam was kinda funny though!

I'm chuffed the heater wire mod had already been done too! :D

This thread should be re-titled - 'Finally FINISHING my M30 swap' ! winkeye

Haha, the neighbours are funny, the got the hump the day before when I was changing brake hoses on my car listening to the radio quietly (even though they are pretty much deaf)

Still many, many jobs to do - subframe bushes, brake hoses, diff bush, refit subframe & diff, fit the prop, exhaust system, coolant hoses, sort out the cage and seat/harness, put my other front legs on, m3/z1 rear brakes, 4 pot fronts. Oh, and the sunstrip!

Target is to have it track-worthy by the 21st April....

I would say that the engine is more p2 than the p3 I was expecting
When you fit the prop you will see why it couldnt go back any more.
Glad you got it in and running.

Fair enough Ed, like Martin says the positioning makes it fairly accessible which is good and afterall, a little more understeer wont hurt

Out of interest, did you ever have the bonnet on the car and shut?

Yes I had the bonnet on didnt look like it would go on but it did with room.
There was a topic on here some where and people measured the gap between the front of the engine and the front panal of the car and mine was the same as andys 335 touring. If its not in p3 you cant use a m3 prop in p3.

as we mentioned the other day, mine sits further back than theos one does at present and my M3 prop is fine. i reckon it could go another 10mm backwards at least with the spare spline adjustment on my prop. though the bulkhead would disagree! :D

did you suss out the extra fuel line in the end?

There was only about 5mm on the spline left when it was in my cab :?
It will be interesting to see if thats the case when you fit the prop theo

the shells must all vary a bit and some play can always be found when fitting the mounts, rubbers etc. maybe the cab works out at a slightly different length?

Just looked into the 3 fuel lines on the 318is matter, this is robbed from a thread I found...
On a non-cat car, the fuel vent pipe has rubber hose on the end that is just left open, I have seen it tucked into the bracket on the side of the passenger side strut tower.
Looking forward to fitting up the prop and diff and getting it moving under it's own steam :D

that's odd! i bet it would have a better place to go than just a bit of hose. very un-bmw-like. :?

to be fair, it looks like quite a good one. considering how long it had been standing i was suprised when it fired up after cranking for 5 seconds or so, just long enough to get the fuel up into the fuel rail. the 90% flat battery was connected up with jump leads too :D

Simon, I had my doubt on the engine, but like Gareth said - It fired up remarkably easily. Looking forward to next weekend once all my coursework is finished and I have four weeks to get it finished.

Got a top rad hose, there are a couple more in a local breakers, probably worth getting them come to think of it.

Just need downpipes now, but they are a pain to get off in a scrapyard :?

Hit a bit of a snag today! Was fitting the propshaft when i noticed that the holes in the bracket on the centre of the prop were much further apart than the threaded holes in the bodywork, and therefore I can't attach the prop - Shit! It appears that the M3 and 325i central brackets have the same hole spacing, but the piece of shit turdwagon 318is, just to be awkward, has a different spacing! :x

So I'm a little stuck now, which is a shame, as it's only the thing stopping me from putting the exhaust on and driving the thing. I was thinking of using the 318is prop but i don't think the gearbox flanges have the same spacing?

Any ideas?

Mate just swap the centre baring to the late one.

The early cars have a different one. All you need to do is take the one off the 'is' prop and pop it onto the M3.

But for fuck sake dont put the prop in a vice!

Well a quick search has revealed that the mounting holes on the centre bearing bracket are 14cm apart on an early car and 13cm apart on a later car - so thats half the problem. The other issue is that the centre bearing does not fit inside the tunnel! It's too big! (tall)

Haha! Wouldn't have had this problem if I had put the engine in a tech 1 sport like I orginally planned to, but it was far too rotten!

BTW Ed - did you change the gearbox oil when you owned it?

I sorted the prop out yesterday with the correct (non fucked) centre bearing, and today bodged an m20 exhaust on today so I could hear it run. It started straightaway, and sounded sweet. However my pleasure was short lived as I noticed that fuel was piddling out of one of the lines in 3 places and had to switch it off after it had only been running for about 30 seconds :x So im going to have to replace the outer fuel line which will be fun, although I'm not sure if I've got things connected the right way.

Continuing on the leaking theme - I also noticed that my radiator is similiar to an incontinent granny. All in all a good day then! Haha.

That's a bit of bad luck Theo, but at least the problems get sorted now rather than on the side of an autobahn! :?

I might be wrong because of that wierd IS fuel pipe set up but I doubt the engine would run if they were on the wrong way round. ?

I posted a thread in technical help and it appears that I have got the return and vent mixed up, I'll swap them over tomorrow morning and see what happens. The Radiator leak is a pain though, but as luck would have it there is a specialist in my village, so I'll take it over to him and hopefulyl have it fixed.

Would it be possible to give me details on that place where you got that sunstrip from please Martin? I want to head over there sometime and get some rollcage padding.

BTW ordered te M3 flange today, costing under £25, so thats one bit of good news!

Aah, I see! I would replace all the rubber fuel pipes as a matter of course, it's cheap and could save a catastrophic fuel hose failure!

I got my roll cage padding at a great little shop called M.A. Services, Teapot Lane, Aylesford - 01622 717720. It's not far from Lind BMW so I'll be down that way soon if you want me to pick some up for you.? Cost me £7.25 (a year ago) for a 2m length.

Martin.

Theo, a bit of information for you. The fuel line can only be bought from bmw by the metre. It cost me £11 for a metre for my i.S. Obviously i didn't use it all. Im sure we can come to an agreement involving a central locking module and a brake duct yes?

you have my msn bud 8)

Sounds good mate, I think the bars on my cage may be slightly larger diameter though, was the padding a tight squeeze on yours?
