maybe this will give hope to those whose e30s are slowly rusting away!

my old mr2 has been on the drive for 9 months waiting for me to put a new engine and box in...got around to it last month, then took the side skirts off to see if it was likely to need welding for the MOT...

:clin:

the bloody thing had rusted from the inside, a lot of the paint under the bodykit looked good, but was as strong as tin foil, could push my fingers thru it

anyway i've "fixed" it now and bar fitting new handbrake cables it's passed its MOT

I've got to say I'm very impressed by your welding prowess Mr. Unna. Not just on this car, but on the E30 with all the little things you've made for it... engine mounts and fog-light air intake... very nice!

*pssssssst* - still after an air intake for when mine's ready to rock and roll... :D

Ver neat welding Mr Unna you obviously had a good teacher (was it you?) which always helps. Just out of interest, I'm going to have to do a similar job on a Justy, for my brother, what do you use to stop it rusting again?

crikey thanks guys i wasn't fishing for compliments! i just thought i'd demonstrate that mot fails due to rust aren't the ends of the world!

and i'm not trying to boast but that really is a bodge up job i've done, just rough patches shaped with a mallet and a block of wood, the whole car's a bit tatty and all the welding is behind the kit anyway. both sides were the same but that's only half a saturday's work (rushing a bit admittedly :teehee: was supposed to be going away with the missus for the weekend by lunchtime)

mig welding is WELL easy, seriously. i had a mate's set in my cellar from when he'd patched up something or other, and just decided to have a go one day, very easy to pick up! i just fiddle with the current setting and wire feed rate until it makes nice welds. it's only difficult if you're trying to weld to thin/rusty metal because you keep burning bigger and bigger holes thru it unless you use a low current setting - which makes it harder to get a nice continuous weld and you end up with a blobby lumpy line instead.

Widge: if it's out of sight then i'd brush on some anti rust primer from a tin. if you weld in new metal it should last ages anyway. an angle grinder is very useful to grind away rust so you can get a better weld
Geeman: if you pm me a postal address i'll make you one and send it, no problem whatsoever to do it, i'm just lazy (and a bit off e30s at the moment, i have not even touched the 335, it's had more than enough attention of late and now it can wait!!)
Ceasar Bob: happy to help you if i can!
Ziggy: half the reason i put this post up was to let you know why i haven't been in touch about your 320 recently! still happy to do it...

my final thought is if you can afford to have 2 cars GET AN OLD MR2 THEY ARE FCUKING BRILLIANT! even if they do have a slight corrosion problem

Zig, you moved it on...? Thought you were keeping it so you could show off how 'old school' you are! So it's going to be a 335i monster then...? Cool.

Was certainly planning to, til it failed its MOT :( If I had the space / time, I'd have kept it, but I don't. Still got the chrome bumpers on the cab so ol' skool it is :) Which reminds me, I need a sticker!

Jon'll do a good job & keep the 320/335 on the zone... plus I'll buy it back when he gets bored / runs out of space!! ;)

Can anyone say "sleeper"?!
