Hi guys, i'm new to the E30 scene, I've got a 318i touring 93 L reg' 64k and want more power,(no turbo suggestions please) how do i go about this, do i try a chip? a new exhaust and induction kit? power boost valve??? I 'm completely in th dark when it comes to BMW, I've been modding RS turbo's for too long and got bored with it. all mods must be DIY and must not involve taking the engine appart/out!!! cheers :D

chip would be the 1st goodie fella

tuning the M40 engine is not really an option on a zero funds-DIY basis.

Chip, good service ( check the cam condition !! ) and concentrate on the styling IMHO.

Could buy a rotten 325i from fleabay for peanuts, strip it for spares to sell on, drop the engine and box into your car, (diff too if it's got a LSD :D ) and enjoy. Think there's one or two on there going begging for pennies.

apart from the usual road to go down regarding chip exhaust etc theres not much that will make much of a difference to the 1.8 performance wise. although you dont want to remove the engine a 2.5 would be cheap and easy conversion to do if your handy with the spanners since youve ruled out turboing winkeye

the m40 is just a crap engine, you can waste 100quid on an air filter a platinum spark plugs for no gain :(

other than that you can get a chip, exhaust but that's still a waste and not much of a gain.

if you want some power just buy a 325 or do an engine swap.

well i would suggest,zone chip(A-tech/Ant)panel filter and exhaust(maybe decat pipe)....but as said service the lump first..dizzy cap/arm..etc..

and although the m40 is slated on this forum...in all honesty its not that bad aslong as you can keep eye on top end i.e cam/spray bar...regular oil changes will pay off as this engine likes to tap when neglected..in a pinto sortta way winkeye

and in terms of power to cc ,no worse than a m30 3.5!

you are though restricted on tuning...it was never popular for the power hungry :o:
