Am going to go look at a tourer tommorow night and hopefully will be buying it.

Its an E Reg 325i tourer,

Seems in good nick and has done about 150k is and has had recent cambelt and full service..

Although i know my stuff im no mechanic and therefore if it looks straight and drives ok I ( and when the ecitement kicks in  ) will probably take it.

Is there anything I should be specifically be looking for on the car or an specific checks that I should do etc?

Thanks in advance

check in the rear storage areas for water. shows if there are leaks and if its bad rear inner arch rust.

Make sure it starts first time from cold, doesn't smoke and see what the part throttle response is like. You're looking for a steady idle (1200 cold, 7-900 warm) and a sharp pickup when you poke the throttle. What you'll probably find is a lumpy/hunting idle and a half second delay between moving the pedal and the engine revving - possibly with the revs actually dropping in between. This shouts air-leak, but could be other things too. Make a fuss :)

Ask the owner if the engine is cold before you start it. If he says yes and the idle drops straight to 7-900 there's either a problem with the car's cold idle or the owner is lying to you and has run the engine up to make sure it starts OK when you arrive (or doesn't make a smokescreen from knackered valve stem seals).

Definitely check the rear wash wipe. It gets all gummed up and also the hose in the rear hatch area fails which means you have a built in shower in the boot. My dog is unimpressed by this "luxury modification"

Not quite sure about it... Mine will rev at ~1300 for a couple of sec. when started from cold or when you come to a junction with the engine cold, but will then come back to ~800...

My mate hath had this problem... we found it most amusing on a trip to london and back... it helped clean the engine we had just picked up....

Yeah i didnt think id seen many E reg's about.... Sort of put me off to start with .. the age I mean.

Has had a good life though ( I am lead to believe ).
Have got nice photos of the car thrown in from '91 '93' and 98 plus a nice comprehensive folser of receipts etc.

Had a look round it , in the dark unfortunately last night but went to a garage for some light and on the face of it its very clean exterior and interior wise.

Just popped out to check this morning and its as clean as I thought!

Will post up some pics In a bit! :D Chuffed!
